Yes, this is an entertaining crime thriller. It speaks to the arrogance, entitlement, and hubris of the very wealthy who think other people are pawns in their own personal game. It also speaks to parenting, both by birth and by adoption. The plot is well paced and intriguing throughout. I will admit that with the various characters (there are quite a few) who are all linked to each other in a variety of different ways, I did get a little confused at times but that might just be me. I took to writing down the names and making brief notes to help connect the dots. It did help. Having a number of characters who ‘couldvedoneit’ helped increase the suspense and intrigue though, widening the pool of suspects, which worked well. I’m just easily confused, lol! This debut novel from Robert Gold had me gripped from the start. A double murder followed by a suicide had me wondering what had happened and intrigued to know more. Investigative journalist Ben Harper is given the story that will propel his career in the stratosphere, one that will see him listed among the nation's best journalists. So why isn't he jumping at the chance? Surely this is the break every journalist would give their right arm for? Then, twelve years later, his mum (Clare) jumped in front of a train on her morning commute to work.

Twelve Secrets by Robert Gold - Debbish Book review: Twelve Secrets by Robert Gold - Debbish

He does – however – have some unanswered questions and another death… and the inevitability of media attention, means he decides to take matters into his own hands and find the answers he’s after. And of course it’s then he learns that he was previously in the dark about A LOT of stuff as a child, and even later at the time of his mother’s death. The multi-layered plot brings all the myriad characters together in a believable way, and it has enough twists and red herrings to satisfy the most ardent of thriller fans. It didn’t, did it? I’m glad to see I wasn’t alone in thinking that. If true, no wonder the marriage is failing though 😳. Ben Harper was engaging and sympathetic. As this is touted to be the first in a series featuring Ben Harper, I am confident that I will try to follow this series to its conclusion. After reading an interview with the author, I understand that PC Dani Cash will have more of a presence in the second novel in the series. – I am anxious to find out more about her character. I received a complimentary digital copy of this novel from Sphere (an imprint of Little, Brown UK) via NetGalley – at my request, for my own reading enjoyment and the writing of this review. Plot - I found the plot really interesting, and different, with no idea how it would all play out. I enjoyed that it wasn't a simple crime, so much was interwoven.

But when he learns about a fresh murder case with links to his brother's death, Ben's life is turned upside down once more. He soon find himself caught in a web of lies, one that implicates everyone around him. And on his quest for answers, Ben discovers one very important truth: A brilliant psychological suspense read. Primarily this follows Ben, a journalist, who is dealing with the upcoming 25th anniversary of his brother’s horrific death. His brother, and his best friend, were both murdered in cold-blood in the 1990s by two teenage girls. Then just ten years ago Ben’s mum killed herself. Now Ben has been asked to write an article as the remaining family member. But it’s not long until past secrets bubble up and Ben wonders whether there’s more to this story than he realised.., Written in first person present, which normally puts me off, this thriller managed to keep me engaged through to the end. Robert now lives in Putney and his new hometown served as the inspiration for the fictional town of Haddley in his thrillers. Believability - Completely; people keeping secrets and covering things up to protect their reputation is spot on. Additionally, people making assumptions and the media "frenzy" is all too real.
