Once you've done a Maintenance Mode reset, you'll need to go through the first time setup again. To help this run smoothly, make sure:

Regular broadcasts work alongside a bunch of popular apps: BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4, Demand 5, BT Player, Now TV, UKTV Play, Sky Store, Quest and S4C – with Netflix coming later. Ten years ago I wandered into the Tokyo equivalent of Currys and saw an HD broadcast for the first time. The clarity blew my mind and I’ve never forgotten the moment. Since then nothing that’s been broadcast has had the same impact. That all changed when the Humax DTR-T4000 turned up, the UK's first set-top box to cater for 4K TV owners, as part of the BT TV ecosystem. Considering how complex the content offering is, the box itself is pretty easy to get to grips with.

BT Ultra HD YouView box: Full review

The software is where the fun is. YouView’s interface is full of features, lovely to use and nice to look at too. For newcomers, YouView is a free service that uses the internet to bring Freeview and on-demand services under a single roof. I got my sister a retail Youview box last Christmas from Currys I went for the one with the 1tb that's a little dearer. You don't need to do anything or change anything - all DTR-T4000 users should see an improvement in HD picture quality, thanks to an adjustment to the video processing setting in the Broadcom chip. Note that the IP content including BT Sport will not work if you use a different make of router, and that the Humax box isn't wireless. BT does supply a 10m Ethernet cable, but you could try a Powerline connection. The BT DTR-2100 Youview+ box is small ,silent, and very responsive. Does everything I want it to do, plus I have now got quite a number of premium IPTV channels which provide excellent PQ. BTW you can also record the Internet channels.

The 4K comes with a catch, though – you need a telly that supports it, of course, and you also need 4K content – which, unfortunately, currently only comes down here to Netflix (with their upper-tier subscription level) and BT Sports (which requires a BT subscription.)

One or two live matches a week will be shown in 4K on the Ultra HD Sport channel (number 434 on the EPG). Other sports lined up include MotoGP, UFC and rugby. To help satiate your desire for 2,160p material, there’s a handful of short promos in 4K designed to show off the format, located in the BT TV portal. As with every other YouView box I’ve tested, the DTR-4000 is incredibly slow to start up when set to High Eco mode, which is designed to save power; you can switch it to Low mode, but we found that it got incredibly hot and its fans whirred noisily even while it was in standby. BT Sport and Ultra HD content John you mentioned on 5th June “You can even get 8k30fps content over HDMI 2.0 with DSC.”, so you know about FRL/DSC. Do you or anybody else disagree with Pete’s info about the specifications for HDMI 2.1. Truth be told, there aren’t a lot of YouView boxes out there, so making a choice is – for good and for bad – not that complicated. Still, because the boxes aren’t cheap, you should still look carefully at the different features they offer (which is what we’re here to help with.) I just bought a Humax DTR-T2000 Youview box - to replace my Toppy 5810 which seems to be on the blink. Its not to be confused with the similar-sounding HDR-2000T!!!!

Similar to its predecessor, BT TV Box Pro comes with integrated search – helping streamline viewing and removing the need to remember which show is on which platform. BT TV’s set-top box also offers pause, rewind and record functionality. It would be nice if someone with a dtr-t4000 did a good youtube video showing the GUI/responsiveness. An Ethernet Connection: The catch-up and on-demand features of YouView work via your broadband connection. The boxes, however, do not support WiFi – so you need to connect the box directly to your broadband router (or via a Powerline Adapter– see our review of the best ones) At the time, Freeview only offered over-the-air programming using somewhat “dumb” set-top receivers – so YouView had a clear advantage. As we’ve come to expect from BT, the new channel is streamed over the internet directly to a YouView set-top box – in this case, the brand-new Humax DTR-T4000. The benefit of the YouView system is that internet channels appear in the YouView guide alongside broadcast channels and you can even record them. It’s this blurring of traditional and internet content that continues to make YouView a real winner in my eyes.

Before you start

Happily, the IPTV stream is outside of your internet service, so watching a broadcast won't affect simultaneous streaming or web browsing elsewhere in the home on a computer. Also, the IP stream is user-agnostic so your speed won't be affected by the number of other users in the district. Even though Freeview (the service offering free-to-air channels via a tuner and an aerial – see our full guide) was already around for years, the companies were looking for an “upgraded” service – one that’ll offer both free channels, a catch-up service, and the ability to pay for TV “add-ons”.

All the YouView boxes come with all the standard features: Over the air channels (some in HD), 7-day catch-up on selected channels via the Electronic Programme Guide, the major broadcasters’ catch-up apps, and the ability to pause and rewind a live broadcast. You can also add premium (paid-for) channels via BT, TalkTalk and Plusnet. On another note the HDR10 streaming via ORF (via VPN) app on my android box, far superior to BT HDR10 for the Premier League etc. We've investigated this thoroughly and have made some significant improvements to the HD Picture quality on the Ultra HD 4K box. An integrated search engine, to find programmes and movies from all the different channels and services (Some Freeview boxes already have something similar)Is it worth it? Yes if you’re a sports fan with an existing BT Infinity subscription. Yes even if you’re not, but desperately want to watch UHD TV right now.
