First I had a mixed feelings as to what was the target audience of this book - was it balanced for teens, grannies or crazy cat ladies like me, since the cat's POV is a bit... specific, let's say. And after finishing the book I am still not sure, but I don't give a f***. I really liked the heart warming tone of it with some major principles of one of the greatest religions explained in a simple and encouraging way. There's some humour in it and a lot of wisdom too. We cats are the most habitual of creatures. Preferred sun loungers, meal times, hidey holes, and scratching posts are among the considerations in which we take daily satisfaction. And it is exactly because many humans embrace routine that we even consider allowing them to share our homes, let alone retain them as members of our staff. (c) The Dalai Lama's Cat" is a delightful novel that reminded me of many Buddhist teachings and that will serve as an introduction to readers new to the subject. As for cats, and other creatures, it is still better to love them as they are.

I love cats and I'm also interested in religions, so which is the best way to learn something about Buddhism if not through the cat of the Dalai Lama? Bodhisattva Cat would be a solid anti-Floating unit if not for the existence of Bishop Cat, whose True Form, Sanzo Cat, does everything Bodhisattva Cat does and more. Bodhisattva may have the higher stats, but when it comes to stalling Floating enemies, there's just no beating Sanzo's spammability. Much of the book consists of the cat's observations: of His Holiness, of his followers, of students and of the personages that come and go through the temple doors. These observations of the `enlightened' and the `not so enlightened' are then refined to illuminate her feline world view. Sounds heavy, doesn't it? It's not. You spend a lot of time figuring out who the various famous visitors are. You are moved by some of the situations and laugh with Snow Lion's observations. The `nuggets' of Buddhism shared are not `preachy' - you don't have to be Buddhist or even religious to find them both interesting and useful in every day life.Overall, I cannot recommend this book enough. I think there is a wealth of things to take from this book and it is otherwise a magnificent and entertaining read. I am very keen to read more written by Michie because he is clearly a very talented author (and from Perth!). Just do yourself a favour and find a copy of this book to entertain your thoughts with something just a little different to your norm! The Dalai Lama’s Cat is a multi-layered treatise on the practical aspects of Buddhist teachings cloaked in the delightful tale of a cat who becomes the pet of the Dalai Lama. Besides introducing us to the fascinating life at the residence of one of the great spiritual leaders of our time, the story weaves together self-deprecating humor and profound teaching through the adventures of HHC (His Holiness’s Cat) a.k.a Snow Lion. Snow Lion is “Everycat” who aspires to being a “bodhicatva”, with all the foibles of his human companions- pride, insecurities, jealousy, over-eating and challenges to being a good meditator. At counterpoint is the Dalai Lama, who rescues Snow Lion, and whose compassionate presence transforms the lives of all the characters.

The book also emphasizes that personal happiness comes from a want and a desire to make others happy. I forget what the actual Buddhist term for this is, but it's definitely something i need to practice in my own life.

Stevens and Samwell-Smith triumph again

Even with Talents, Tathagata Cat will never be able to reach the standards of Sanzo Cat, who ends up having the same exact abilities, so there is no real reason to invest in it. All too often I know this with my cat Bella. She absolutely knows that little device ‘produces’ the light on the ground and that she can never ‘hold’ it…but that’s not the point at all, is it? She still needs to practice even though she is enlightened. Ryan, Gavin (2011). Australia's Music Charts 1988–2010 (PDFed.).
