Taste of Cinema writer David Harkin states that " Dog Soldiers ditches the drama of the original Wolfman of the 1940s and pushes Dog Soldiers into Aliens territory as seven-foot lycanthropes besiege a tiny cottage while macho soldiers fight for their lives". Neil Marshall stated in an audio commentary for Dog Soldiers, that the moment in the film when Megan cuts her hand on a shard of glass was meant to be a setup for a second sequel about werewolf DNA, which would complete a planned trilogy. However, he added that the planned sequels will "probably amount to nothing now." [43] See also [ edit ] Dog Soldiers is being re-released in UK cinemas on 23rd October. Produced at a time when massive strides in digital film-making were just around the corner, the film (like contemporaneous releases Dark Water and Donnie Darko) marks the end of era for independent horror films, as expensive celluloid was eschewed for the new technology and, if it had been produced just a few years later, Dog Soldiers would likely be a very different looking film.

The film contains homages to H. G. Wells as well as the films The Evil Dead, Zulu, Aliens, The Matrix and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. [11] Writing [ edit ] SHOULD I GET THIS?: Absolutely. There have been previous Blu-ray releases (only available here as US imports), but these were limited by the inferior source materials available at the time. When night falls and the full moon appears, carnage descends, and it’s werewolves versus soldiers in a battle for survival, asthey face the unflinching terror of the Dog Soldiers. This unapologetically brutal and darkly funny horror will drive you barking mad with demented delight. Sitting around the campfire telling each other scary stories, it is Pertwee’s character Sgt. Harry Wells who truly makes an impact on his men. Delivered in a way that draws it’s audience in and keeps their attention, it is perfect to set up a jump scare that comes at just the right time. The scare though does not lessen the impact of the story he tells, and many horror fans love that scene for how much of a masterclass it is, not only in acting but also Marshall’s direction. Science Fiction Weekly ( SciFi.com). Archived from the original on 22 June 2003. Dialogue is clean and clear, sounds natural and give any directionality it needs. Bass is reasonable, there are a few LF effects, and the sub is used to fill out thumps, bumps and gunshots, and there is a wonderful deep resonance when the squaddies first encounter the house – it’s rich, powerful and unnerving; deep enough to rattle the floorboards! The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image, in the widescreen 1.85:1 aspect ratio, using 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range (HDR), a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec for Dolby Vision and HDR10. Marshall wrote the first draft in 1996. [12] It took six years to refine the script and acquire financing. [13] Marshall wanted the focus to be on the soldiers, with the creatures being an enemy that happens to be werewolves. [14] Marshall wanted to avoid cliches about werewolf curses or "how awful it is to be a werewolf", which Marshall felt was a trope exhaustingly used in many werewolf films. [15] Filming [ edit ] Dog Soldiers was released on DVD in the U.S. in November 2002 by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. [26]

What is immediately clear is how filmic this image is; the 16mm grain structure gives an authenticity to the picture. Detail is terrific, there is texture to skin, clothing has weave, dirt and grime on the soldiers, wood grain, foliage, tree bark, blood splatter, peeling paint, everything is clear and distinct, with the caveat of the inherent source softness. They conclude that "Dog Soldiers has aged pretty well." [24] Awards [ edit ] Many will know Neil Marshall for The Descent, but for fans of the werewolf genre, he made his mark on them with Dog Soldiers. While An American Werewolf in London may be the very best of werewolf movies (in my opinion of course) Dog Soldiers came out of nowhere to become an instant classic. Hunter, Rob (22 June 2015). I absolutely love that new cover art, would be great if they did glow in the dark for the moon and title. When a group of foul-mouthed squaddies are out on training in the middle of nowhere, nobody could have guessed their opponents would turn out to be vicious werewolves. Trapped in a family home and surrounded by the hairy beasts, it’s not long before the group find themselves with a no-win situation they must survive, and even worse they may even miss the England vs Germany game. A new 4K restoration from the Original Camera Negative approved by Director Neil Marshall and Director of Photography Sam McCurdy

I well remember Dog Soldiers, the debut feature from director Neil Marshall, causing a considerable buzz when first released in 2002 – it’s been a lot of fun revisiting it since Second Sight’s restoration arrived in the post. Dog Soldiers was shot on 16mm film using Arriflex Cameras with this release newly scanned in 4K and restored from the original camera negative, approved by director Neil Marshall and director of photography Sam McCurdy. The Second Sight 4k remastered Dog Soldiers blu ray uses the original film negative (that was thought to be lost) that Neil Marshall found. I was looking at importing the Shout Factory version recently but this is going to be too good to pass up A " Little Red Riding Hood"-inspired web series, Dog Soldiers: Legacy, was announced in September 2011 by producer and Kismet vice-president, Allen, now going by D.
