He smiled coolly, holding a big pair of grilling tongs. His apron was smeared with something dark. It looked like - blood. His gaze was steely. Hannah felt her stomach churn a bit. I listened to the audio, narrated by Vivienne Leheny. I wasn’t enthralled with her narration and almost changed the audio listening speed to faster. I intended to do that, and then I was halfway through! Her voice proved to be perfect for the story! Some of the pleasure of the first (and best) part of The Cabin in the Woods comes from trying to see just over the narrative horizon and figure out what these incompatible sets of clichés have to do with each other. Two distinct kinds of movie are being yoked, by violence, together, and the performers inhabit their familiar roles with unusual wit." Retrieved December 26, 2018.Goodness, this one was not what I expected! I really dislike writing anything less than a raving review, but I just can't do that with this one, unfortunately, which makes me sad! A surprise early screening of the film was held at the Butt-Numb-A-Thon in December 2011, attracting highly positive reactions. [24] [25] [26] The film later screened on March 9, 2012, at the South by Southwest film festival, also in Austin. [27] Home media [ edit ] Knegt, Peter (December 12, 2012). And lest you believe that we only get the group scenes from Hannah's perspective, let me assure you, we do not. We get those scenes from multiple perspectives as well.

The Cabin in the Woods". Metacritic. Archived from the original on July 11, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. Was this my favorite book by Unger? No, I still have a special place in my reading heart for Ink and Bone, but I did enjoy this one. I enjoyed being privy to the POV of various characters. They are not the group of people that I would want to go on a luxury cabin vacation with. I listened to most of this book as an audio but switched to digital for the final third when my ear--buds died. An easy transition, though it didn’t clear up my confusion. I enjoyed the story. It might be better read than listened to. I needed to rewind a few times, thinking I missed a thread. I didn’t. It’s one of those thrillers that allows many open threads which ultimately come together to knit a nice ending! There are two kinds of unreliable narrators: those who deliberately mislead under the cover of drugs/alcohol/amnesia, and those who simply don’t reveal the whole truth. The second works much better for readers as they discover truths when they are unveiled, without making them feel like they were being fooled earlier. Rose is in the second category. She doesn’t lie, she just doesn’t tell you the whole truth. It is like a game, trying to figure out if she’s misleading you. a b c d e Whedon, Joss; Goddard, Drew; Bernstein, Abbie (2012). The Cabin in the Woods: The Official Visual Companion. London: Titan Books. ISBN 9781848565241.

The characters are all flawed. There are layers of mistakes made both in the present and the past, bad judgments, failures, lies, deception and secrets. When Hannah's often over-the-top brother, Mako, rents an isolated luxury cabin for their friend group for a weekend, she and her husband Bruce, begrudgingly agree to go. Sometimes it is just easier to give Mako what he wants than to fight against him. Adams, Sam (February 3, 2023). "M. Night Shyamalan's New Movie Ends With Something Worse Than a Twist". Slate . Retrieved March 25, 2023. Scott, A.O. (April 12, 2012). "Taking a Chain Saw to Horror Movie Clichés". The New York Times. Archived from the original on December 26, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. There are some throwaway storylines/characters that go nowhere, and the fact that there are a large number of characters in the first place makes it frustrating at times to keep them all straight. This is a book that is best experienced on paper, I think the audiobook would be massively confusing. I also didn't care for the big "wrap up" at the end, because if you're paying attention, you should have figured it all out from the narrative and won't need it dumbed down and explained to you like the end of a television show. This story is told in a mix of first and third person narration from multiple points of view. I do love a good multiple view point thriller, although I usually prefer when all viewpoints are told in first person and struggle to connect with the characters when told in third person. I was okay with the mixing of first and third in this one since it seems to make sense within the story and I understood the authors reasons for doing so. The title makes the book sound very creepy. But there’s nothing eerie or spooky about the story. It isn’t even mainly about the cabin, thus making it an inaccurate title. Most of it isn’t set in that location. Reilly, Luke (April 14, 2015). "Joss Whedon, Lionsgate Facing Lawsuit Over The Cabin in the Woods". IGN. Archived from the original on December 26, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. Sometimes it’s hard to tell what a book is about, and in the case of The Cabin in the Woods, that is definitely true. (And that synopsis poem doesn’t reveal much….) Sharkey, Betsy (April 13, 2012). "Review: 'The Cabin in the Woods' is Joss Whedon's inside joke". Los Angeles Times. Archived from the original on January 2, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018.

The characterisation is excellent you feel everything Rose feels and you root for her and those who help her. Her paranoia, tension, anxiety, helplessness and fear come across loud and clear. As I mentioned above, there were many things going on in this book, but the concept was so different and interesting. I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called Our Father, and for some reason I kept thinking about that show. Which, after reading this book, I would recommend watching that documentary. It’s very chilling. Goldman, Eric (April 12, 2012). "The Cabin in the Woods Review". IGN. Archived from the original on December 26, 2018 . Retrieved December 26, 2018. There's also Henry, who we start following as a child in a completely different time and place. Also, it's not clear how his life is connected to the rest of the story. She also writes New Adult romance for Pan Macmillan (UK) / Simon & Schuster (US) under the pen name Mila Gray. The Cabin in the Woods (2011)". Rotten Tomatoes. Outstanding imagery and word choice! A. O. Scott of The New York Times said, "Novelty and genre traditionalism often fight to a draw. Too much overt cleverness has a way of spoiling dumb, reliable thrills. And despite the evident ingenuity and strenuous labor that went into it, The Cabin in the Woods does not quite work." Scott added: Secluded Cabin Sleeps Six is a psychological thriller about three couples who vacation in a luxury cabin in the woods of Georgia. With the threat of a hurricane, hidden motives come to light, affairs are revealed, and a dark secret is unearthed, culminating in murder. The Cabin in the Woods is a 2011 science fiction [4] comedy horror film directed by Drew Goddard in his directorial debut, produced by Joss Whedon, and written by Whedon and Goddard. [5] It stars Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Fran Kranz, Jesse Williams, Richard Jenkins, and Bradley Whitford. The plot follows a group of college students who retreat to a remote forest cabin where they fall victim to a variety of monsters while technicians manipulate events from an underground facility.
