However, it is important to understand that bio-media are living creatures, and if they are not cleaned properly, they can die. It is best to use tank water when cleaning bio-media, rather than tap water, which often contains chlorine, which can kill beneficial bacteria.

Anoxic filter - covered in detail greatly by Manky Sanke - my positive experience with it is covered in my thread on building un-planted anoxic filter Still - even if one of the above de-nitrification filters is installed, partial water exchange is a good thing for our fish and pond ecosystem - bringing fresh water into the pond helps to replenish also trace elements etc. consumed by the bio-film on the walls and in the filters. If you say where you are based and you only need a litre or 2 of K1 someone local to you might have some that you can buy off then to save you having to buy a 25 litre bag of the stuff? If you’re considering installing a filtration system for your Koi pond, you’re probably wondering what is K1 filter media. If you’re not sure what it is, this article will provide you with an overview of this essential component of your filtration system. What is k1 filter media With a new shape and profile, K+ Filter Media has also been designed to have an increased and class leading surface area, meaning an overall surface area of 1,350m2 per m3. More importantly for biological filtration, the protected surface area of K+ Media is 1,025m2 per m3. This allows a stable bio-film to form and remain intact when used in moving bed biological filtration, as in the new Nexus+.The small size of K1 Micro makes it ideal to be used a replacement for beads in a bead filter. Not only will the vast 950m2 per m3 protected surface area maintain a bio-film that helps to improve nitrification, water quality and clarity, but K1 Micro can offer many more benefits: Maturing the K1 Media bio-media is important because a delicate eco-system is naturally developing for the bacteria involved in the nitrification process. K1 Media provides the maximum active surface area for the bacteria to colonize, more than other types of static media. It is this process which removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water. So, by way of an example, if you expect to feed a maximum of 200g. of fish food a day you should include 50 litres of K1 media. Remember this only a guide and is primarily used to size a filter before installation. once built and installed regular water quality monitoring is the correct method of assessing filter performance. Alternative Filter Media I don't think that there is any hard evidence that showers are any better than any other form of modern filtration. I have 250 litres of K1 in a large (8ft) multibay, which copes with any amount of food I throw in. I use, and not everyone agrees with it, HP to neutralise the PP when you have PP'd the media for 24 hours. You can leave the PP longer but it will eventually neutralise itself. Thanks to their large surface for the settlement of micro-organisms (Approx. 5000m² per m³) Oase Pond Pads will remove ammonia NH3/ammonium NH4 and nitrite NO2 via nitrification with 10L of media having the the capacity to decompose approximately 200g of fish food in a 24 hour period. Being buoyant and small, this medium gets everywhere if given the chance. If using it in a sump, some form of mesh or screening is essential to keep it where it’s needed. For some applications, this won’t be a problem — it can be placed in a bead filter for pond use, for example, where it will be contained.

Incorporating Kaldnes Moving Bed™ Process. Developed by Professor Halvard Odergard at Trondheim University of Science and Technology the Kaldnes Moving Bed™ bio film process has been designed specifically to create the most effective environment for the nitrification process to take place. The media is engineered in a wheel shape and is slightly positively buoyant, allowing a small amount of water flow (created by adding air to the process) to circulate the media throughout the vessel. After many years of research, Evolution Aqua have now developed a new media that not only gives class leading surface area, but also overcomes the problem of long maturation times. i would have expected the Micro K1 not to be as good but as far as i can see it is just as good. The other upside is you dont need a massive pump to compress the beads when you're using K1. Kaldnes Moving Bed process, which has been scientifically tried and tested in fish farming and waste water treatment for over 10 years, is now available for fish keepers and is exclusively distributed worldwide by Evolution Aqua. The media is engineered in a wheel shape and is slightly positively bouyant. This allows a small amount of water flow to circulate the media throughout the vessel. This flow is created with your air pump and air stones or diffuser etc. Due to chaotic movement of the Kaldnes K1 media, the process is self-cleaning and requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic maintenance, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter preventing high levels of ammonia and nitrite within the water.

The minerals act as a food source for the bacteria, helping the bacteria to develop and multiply at a faster rate, further improving maturation times. Will K1 mixed in with K1 micro be an issue or vice versa I wonder. As without seeing the two side by side and comparing with mine Im not sure how Ill tell which Ive got.I've not used K1 Micro just K1 and the problem with mixing the 2 could be that eventually you could start loosing the K1 Micro through the grill in the Eazy Pod unless it's designed for K1 Micro. Not sure if the sleeve that holds the media away from the centre pipe is different in the newer Eazy Pods to allow for the K1 Micro or not? Designed to filter water with high biological efficiency, K1 filter media is an effective addition to any bio filter system. These media can be used in fresh water aquariums, marine aquariums, koi ponds, aquaculture, and hydroponics, among other aquatic environments. Their versatility also makes them a great option for many filtration applications. For koi ponds, they are excellent choices for this media because they are biodegradable.

What is K1 media?

I think I have K1 Micro, came with the Pod when I bought it 10 years ago. Its about diameter of a 5p maybe smaller.Sounds reasonably big although it's in reality about 25 litres max possibly? The beauty of K1 media lies with its ability to be easily cleaned and resistant to clogging. Due to its neutral buoyancy a small amount of air injected into a filter will cause the bed to move, thus separating the excess solids from the media surface area. The solids can then be run to waste. In this way the effective surface area remains as high as possible. Recommendations For all but the smallest aquaponic systems ensure you include a method of removing suspended solids K1 media is a light, small, wheel shaped plastic media that floats easily. It is used in pond filters to trap suspended solids and also to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. These micro-organisms convert toxic ammonia produced by the fish into less toxic nitrate, and ultimately nitrate, through the nitrification process. A key feature of this media is that it has a fantastic protected surface area which greatly aids the development of these bacteria. It allows bacteria to colonise within the filter and, at the same time, prevents the unnecessary loss of bacteria through excessive water movements.
