They get in when the skin is injured in some way. There are many creams, gels and medicated plasters for treating warts and verrucas. You can buy these over the counter at a pharmacy. If you see a GP about a wart or verruca, they will usually suggest this first too. This is a freezing process in which liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the verruca which kills the infected skin cells. It causes minimal tissue inflammation and has a high success rate. In studies, Swift successfully cleared more than 3 out of 4 long-lasting, stubborn warts which hadn't responded to previous treatment. You may only need one treatment, but up to 70% of verrucas respond in 1-3 treatments. You should always consult your doctor before using any new medicine if you are pregnant. Your doctor can discuss any risks posed to you and your baby. Freezing treatment can be painful. Sometimes a small blister develops for a day or so on the nearby skin after treatment. Also, there is a slight risk of scarring the nearby skin or nail or damaging underlying tissues such as tendons or nerves. It is not suitable for younger children or for people with poor circulation. Before applying the treatment, soften the wart by soaking it in water and rubbing it with an emery board or pumice stone to remove any excess hard skin. This acid burns off the top layer of the wart. You can buy salicylic acid at pharmacies, or your doctor may prescribe one.If these don't work, a podiatrist can offer treatment with stronger acid. There are over-the-counter cryotherapy preparations that claim to remove warts and verrucas. These are a type of cryotherapy that you apply yourself at home. You can buy them at a pharmacy. They contain other gases that act to freeze the wart or verruca. However, there is very little evidence to support their use. They can’t freeze at temperatures as low as liquid nitrogen, so they’re unlikely to work as well. The tape should then be removed and the affected area soaked in luke-warm water and the wart pared down to remove any dead skin cells. The wart should then be left uncovered overnight and the duct tape reapplied once again in the morning. This process can be continued for up to two months. Duct tape might be more effective if a salicylic acid paint or gel is first applied to the wart before then covering in duct tape
