Description
Just because it is inexpensive and does not take high-resolution images does not mean it is useless. AF speed is passable. It's not very fast, but I've never needed it to be faster for photographing friends and family.
This is a DX lens, which means it works perfectly on every DX digital camera from the D40 through the D300, and from the D100 and D1 through the D3. I live by VR because my best shots are hand-held in fading light. VR is a huge benefit when shooting hand-held at slow shutter speeds from about 1/4 to 1/30 of a second. If you like to shoot interiors and night without a tripod as I do, this lens is for you unless you already have the Nikon 18-200mm VR. So how to discern those which I recommend from those that I would not (not even for total beginners)? As a rule of thumb, you can use the following rule: the latest two generations of 18-55mm lenses that offer much better performance, have a button on the side of the lens barrel – this button is pushed to get the lens into the ready position. NIKON D750 + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 @ 55mm, ISO 100, 1/80, f/8.0 CompatibilityNikon says forget it on any of the D1, D2, D3 or D4 series, the D800, D700, D610, D600, D300 series, D200, D100, D90, D80, D70 series, D60, D50, D40 series, D7000, D5100, D5000, D3200, D3100 or D3000. It also won't work on any 35mm camera. Although they are not that great in terms of quality, that does not mean they will fall apart immediately. You can still take photos and use it adequately. For less money, the B+W 55mm 010 is an excellent filter, as are the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters, but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best. August 2016. There is a big mess in all the names and types of the small and inexpensive 18-55mm Nikkor zooms that Nikon produced since 2005. The orientation is difficult since there are eight different versions of this lens (in five generations, the last three of which are either stabilized or non-stabilized). Nikon currently ships two types of 18-55mm zoom, either with or without optical stabilization. While “only” 4 different versions are sold at the time being, you may still easily encounter older versions on the grey market. The first three generations were notorious for poor build quality and low optical performance, so I do not recommend buying them at any price. If considering the 18-55mm focal range, I recommend buying either of the last two generations (depending on your DSLR body type – see the compatibility chart below). Type
In fact, it is great for starting photographers since this can be the tool that can teach you how to take good photos. This 18-55mm VR is the same as the ridiculously good 18-55mm II kit lens, with the addition of Vibration Reduction (VR). I'm addicted to VR, since with VR I can shoot without a tripod even in the dimmest light. VR helps make remarkably sharper photos when hand-held between 1/4 and 1/30 second. Lenses for professional shooting are expensive, hence not suitable for beginners as one risk getting them damaged. However, with the 18-55mm, an amateur photographer can comfortably practice without worrying about being spoilt as they are affordable. The 18-55mm VR feels perfectly matched to the weightless D40, D40x, D60 or D80. It doesn't feel bad on my D3, either. It's light but solid. The zoom ring is damped perfectly. Ease of Use
Guess what? If you destroy this 18-55 VR after the five-year USA warranty expires, buy a another new one and you're out a total of not much more than half the price of the 18-200 VR or 16-85 VR. It's not likely to break with normal use: I've made 10,000 shots or more with my non-VR 18-55mm pictured below. Just like the miraculous 18-55mm AF-S II, this little plastic lens is a miracle. It's sharp, sharp, sharp. But don’t limit yourself to only shooting with golden-hour light. Great photos can be captured on cloudy days or even in the harsh light of midday. Each lighting situation presents unique opportunities and challenges. Cloudy days, for example, provide a soft, diffused light that can add a sense of moodiness, while bright sunny days will help produce vibrant colors and strong contrast.
