Description

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. W. Gruner have put together a masterful tome that sets the scene of execution day and puts you in Master Franz Schmidt's shoes as he does his duty for his country.

This was definitely a diary that he used to keep track of those that he executed and how they were executed. If screwed up during an execution, you could be the next head on the chopping block; as exacting swift and precise justice was just as important and carrying out the deed at all. I am glad that I read this book, but, unlike “The Faithful Executioner”, I don’t see myself revisiting it in the future. Absolutely incredible book, the book starts with an explanation of the legal system in Nuremberg at the time giving lots of context for the later entries. After reading this there is nothing left to be said about the barbarity of criminal procedures in Islamic or any other societies! John Ellis was Britain's executioner for 23 years, and in his time he hanged some of the most infamous murderers of all time. Hans Müllner, alias der Model, a smith, who violated a girl of thirteen years of age, filling her mouth with sand that she might not cry out; also Hans Kellner of the Reuth by Forchheim, a thief; both beheaded with the sword at Nuremberg.

An interesting read, albeit less in-depth then I would have liked compared to the Faithful Executioner.

But it still puts what was perceived as high crime worthy of 16th Century capital punishment into perspective. George Schorpff of Ermb, near the hohenstein, a lecher, guilty of beastliness with four cows, two calves and a sheep. The diary is a bit frustrating in that you’re never given motivations for the crimes, and in some places I dearly wanted to know more of what went on. This was the obituary in which learning and high-minded pursuits went on while this story of criminal justice could have been t into effect on anybody unlucky enough to have acquired a bad reputation, although some of the crimes were absolutely appalling too. When they were being led out, the Margrave’s wife wanted to see the poor sinners as they passed, and saw her own husband among them, whom she embraced and kissed, for she had not known her husband had been arrested, nor that he was a fellow of that sort.

but there is a really good essay about the german criminal justice system in the 1500s and 1600s in the beginning of the book. Originally published more than eighty years ago, A Hangman’s Diary gives a year-by-year breakdown on all of Master Schmidt’s executions, which include hangings, beheadings, and other methods of murder, as well as explanations of each crime and the reason for the punishment. The analysis and explanation given in the first chapters make it a fascinating read, without them it would be a little gruesome and could not be appreciated. If, however, you are after a rare piece of source material from the sixteenth century, then this is excellent. Most of our PDFs are also available to download and we're working on making the final remaining ones downloadable now.Sometimes difficult to get through because of repetitiveness, and some sections seem to drag on, due to perhaps Meister Schmidt's particular feelings on a specific execution or torture. George Presigel of Gnotzga, who killed his wife and afterwards hanged her so that it might be supposed she had hanged and destroyed herself; had also formerly stabbed a man. Now an esoteric of legal and criminal history, A Hangman’s Diary gives a year-by-year breakdown on all of Master Franz Schmidt’s executions, which included hangings, beheadings, and other methods, as well as details of each capital crime and the reason for the punishment.

Henssla Humbsen of Lambretzhoffen, alias Adam; Merdta Herdegen of Schwabach, alias Henna and Stürer Merta; George Hiss of Sultzbach, alias Hegelregler or Sultz-Kürchner; three thieves and robbers, who attacked people by night in their houses and in lonely farms, bound them, tortured them and did violence to them, robbing them of money and clothes. A Hangman's Diary is not only a collection of detailed writings by Schmidt about his work, but also an account of criminal procedure in Germany during the Middle Ages. Anna Strölin of Grefenberg, a murderess, who with premeditation murdered and slew her own child, a boy of six years of age, with a chopper. Eight years later, in September 1932, after another bout of heavy drinking, Ellis died by suicide, cutting his throat with a razor.Instead we got more of a log book of each prisoner he had to execute, the manner in how he did it, and sometimes the list of their crimes. But the woman Lengin, when she brought forth her child alive in the house of a smith, throttled it and buried it in a heap of refuse. An unusual and fascinating classic of crime and punishment, A Hangman's Diary is more than a history lesson; it shows the true anarchy that inhabited our world only a few hundred years ago.
