approx – The crowning takes place. We will see the King crowned by the Archbishop of Canterbury with St Edward's Crown. A fanfare sounds. The Abbey bells ring for two minutes and a gun salute is fired by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery stationed at Horse Guards Parade. Gun salutes at the Tower of London are fired by the Honourable Artillery Company, and at all saluting stations throughout the UK, Gibraltar, Bermuda, and ships at sea. Next the King holds the sovereign’s orb, before it is returned to the altar and touches the sovereign’s ring, puts on the single white coronation glove to hold the sovereign’s sceptre with cross in his right hand, with sovereign’s sceptre with dove in his left, ready to be crowned.

The national anthem is sung and the King's outward procession, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, makes its way to the Great West Door, where the King receives a greeting from leaders and representatives from different faith communities. During the recognition, the King stands in the coronation theatre and turns to show himself to the people at each of the four directions – east, south, west and north. He is presented with the coronation bible and takes the oath, and then prays aloud with the King's Prayer. Entry is free to the event and party goers are invited to bring their own picnic, Hartlepool Brass Band will be providing the music from 1pm onwards on Saturday. On Sunday, Nasir Mosque on Brougham Terrace is inviting the community to attend its Coronation garden party from 12.30pm onwards. Gun salutes at the Tower of London are fired by the Honourable Artillery Company, and at all saluting stations throughout the UK, Gibraltar, Bermuda, and ships at sea. After a blessing, the King is enthroned on his throne chair.

On 2 June 1953, news reached that Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay had made it to the summit of Mount Everest. The Queen presented the 14 members of the expedition with special edition Coronation medals with the extra wording 'Mount Everest Expedition'. The Coronation service fell into six parts: the recognition, the oath, the anointing, the investiture (which includes the crowning), the enthronement and the homage. Some people in the Abbey witnessed their fourth Coronation. Princess Marie Louise (Queen Victoria's granddaughter) had also seen the Coronations of King Edward VII (1902), King George V (1911) and King George VI (1937). The Archbishop of Canterbury will carry out the ceremony, as Charles becomes the nation's oldest king to be crowned at the age of 73. The coronation is Britain's first in seven decades, since Queen Elizabeth II's crowning in 1953.

Last year, millions of people took to the streets across the UK to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, with tables, chairs and rows of bunting lining many streets across Teesside and beyond. The Government has release guidance on how to organise your own street party. The incumbent Earl Marshal is responsible for organising the Coronation. Since 1386 the position has been undertaken by The Duke of Norfolk. The 16th Duke of Norfolk was responsible for The Queen's Coronation in 1953 and he was also responsible for the State funeral of Sir Winston Churchill (1965) and the investiture of The Prince of Wales (1969). A big screen in Darlington Market Place will stream the ceremony live from Westminster Abbey, with families also invited to take part in craft sessions in marquee set up in the town centre. On Sunday, May 7, Darlington will host its own Coronation Concert with performances from Britain’s Got Talent's Soldiers of Swing and Discography. He is presented with the golden spurs, symbolising knighthood and chivalry, the jewelled sword of offering and the armills, the bracelets of sincerity of wisdom. The King puts on the stole royal – a long, narrow embroidered band of gold silk which goes around the shoulders, mirroring outfits worn by a priest or a bishop. Preston Park Museum and Grounds are also hosting a series of events throughout the bank holiday weekend to commemorate the Coronation; with arts and craft activities as well as another Coronation Big Lunch. On Monday, there is a Big Help Out bluebell planting event taking place, more details can be found here.On the day of the Coronation itself, The Hartlepool Guild of Bell Ringers will be ringing the bells at three churches as part of a nationwide Ring for The King event. The Guild, which is made up of both experienced and new Bell Ringers, will ring simultaneously at Stranton Church, St Aidan’s Church, in Oxford Road, and St Oswald’s Church, in Brougham Terrace from 10am until 10.45am. The King will be crowned at midday in Westminster Abbey during a two-hour service. Here are all the key timings. There is also a number of community get togethers taking place in and around Hartlepool. The Heugh Battery Museum at Hartlepool Headland is inviting people to join them for a giant community street party from 12pm until 4pm on Saturday, May 6, and Sunday, May 7. During the recognition, the King stands in the coronation theatre and turns to show himself to the people at each of the four directions – east, south, west and north.

To mark the Coronation, Chaloner Street Market in Guisborough will take place between 10am and 3pm on Sunday, May 7.
