Description

The compelling YA debut from Laura Bates, founder of the Everyday Sexism Project and bestselling author of Girl Up. However, it did not affect me personally as a reader, as you often hear these derogatory terms in school. A distrarla dalla sua vecchia vita arriva anche una scoperta fatta per portare a termine un progetto scolastico, e la vita della ragazza si intreccia a quella di Maggie, una donna vissuta nel 1600 accusata di stregoneria.

It’s a modern story with a historical twist, where the two girls’ stories set in different centuries run alongside each other. She read English literature at St John's College, Cambridge, and graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2007. It follows Anna, a teenage girl, who has moved away from a big city to a small fishing village in the East Neuk of Fife in Scotland.I did see some reviews of that one that said that the main character had made some bad choices and should take some responsibility (a sentiment I completely disagree with) but I do think that Anna is a much more relatable character than the heroine of TEAoO and it's very easy to understand how she was persuaded to do the things she did. CW: horrific slut shaming, sharing and doctoring of nude images of young teen, death of father from cancer, teen abortion. While there, she begins to explore the story of a woman burned for witchcraft centuries ago in her new hometown. i really liked how there was an almost fabulist element to this with maggie's story intertwining with anna's. As both girls’ stories start to unravel, it becomes clear that attitudes towards young women have not moved on much over the last four centuries.

Often shocking, sometimes amusing and always poignant, everyday sexism is a protest against inequality and a manifesto for change. i can't even imagine how many girls and women have to go through this and how victims are blamed and shamed whilst the abusers get away with it. Introducing Laura Bates' fantasy debut, the first in a breathtaking and sweeping duology, exploring questions about power, courage and the stories we tell about the past. Young women who see themselves in this story will feel less alone and take courage and strength from it. Things may have improved and changed but when it really comes down to it, women are still held to a completely different standard from men and are punished when they are judged to have failed to live up to it.The United Kingdom's international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. i love that bates included a number of resources for people going through any of these issues as well as a list of conversation starters for a classroom situation. The Burning lights a fire in you - one that makes you want to fight for change and ignite sparks in others so the fire spreads and spreads.

Something that I didn’t like is that it took me so long to understand how the story of Maggie was important and related to Anna’s story. The Burning is the kind of novel that wants to convey a Message™ to readers and it does so at the expense of things like character development and plot construction. I'm especially glad that the author didn't turn the story around and make the main character a helpless young lady who needed to be saved by a boy or by love, but instead showed strong female character traits in both Anna and her mum towards the end when handling the situation.Bellissima storia che tratta temi attuali e di grande importanza che avvelenano la nostra società, soprattutto tra gli adolescenti: bullismo, Revenge Porn e isolamento, ma non solo. On the cover of this book Holly Bourne describes it as a book teen girls NEED to read and I fully agree.
