Description

This mini-series reimagines Namor the Sub-Mariner as a horrible myth, folklore like Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman or the Wendigo. Professor Stein makes a career out of disproving myths and discovering the factual scientific explanation behind them, and he takes a small crew into the Marianas Trench to find Atlantis! But the crew is a superstitious lot who informs him of the dark monster "Namor" who lurks beneath the depths. As Stein and his crew get closer to Atlantis they start to see things out of the corner of their eye, they have visions, and the expedition is proving somehow... dangerous? Besides the regular dangers of deep-sea travel, of course. But is it all in their minds as the pressure and isolation gets to them, or is there some truth behind the myth?

Sub-Mariner: The Depths Series by Peter Milligan - Goodreads

Fantastic Racism: In his youth he was a pariah in Atlantis due to, being, well, white - where normal Atlanteans are blue. They called him "pale crab." He's happy to note that they don't do that anymore, but the Blue Marvel thinks they just don't do it to his face. With Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch. The two had their famous battles, but they later fought side-by-side in World War II in the Invaders. Namor later referred to Hammond as someone he respects (and for a guy like Namor, that's quite a compliment). Graceful in Their Element: Not that he's clumsy on land, but he's better in the water. On land he can give the Hulk a good fight. In water he would win. This is demonstrated in Aaron's Avengers run when it takes one of the most powerful Avengers teams, including a fully Hulked out Jen Walters and Thor, to hold him down, while Captain Marvel hits him with her best right hook. He treats it as a love tap. Peter Milligan writes a very, very dark horror story in "Sub-Mariner: The Depths" where the tension builds as the submarine drops further into the ocean and the bodies start to pile up. You hardly get to see Namor himself and that's what makes the story so effective - all I could think about while I was reading this was a list of brilliant horror films like Alien, The Abyss, Event Horizon, Se7en, all of which have elements found in this story. The Depths is an outlier when it comes to Namor stories. It’s a psychological horror tale set deep under the ocean. Set in the 1950s, it follows a rationalist sceptic and a submarine crew as they traverse the dark ocean searching for Atlantis. However, their expedition is not without dangers – originating from both the mind and dark depths. The evocative art of Esac Ribic is a perfect compliment to Milligan's story, with a painted appearance that helps enhance the Classics Illustrated feel to the story. Namor met the Blue Marvel after mistaking him for another invader from the surface world. The two engaged in a fierce struggle, and emerged as close friends. Good Old Fisticuffs: Occasionally, he will use his trident, but for the most part, Namor's main weapons are his fists.

Doctor Randolph Stein, famous debunker of myths and legends, is charged by the Navy to seek out an expedition lost in the Marianas Trench in an effort to find Atlantis. Stein and his “deep water” crew descend in search of the missing crew, but the deeper they go, the more the stories of the infamous Namor play at the edges of his mind. No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Namor beat him to near death for trying to stop him from forcefully drafting Tiger Shark to his team of Defenders of the Deep.Wow! A SubMariner book that doesn't feature the title character. You wouldn't think that would work....

Imperius Rex!" It sure sounds cool. Namor's saying he's top dog, pretty much. Imperius is powerful/mighty, empire, while rex means king. Stan Lee did his homework. note Imperius is not actually latin. The latin word would be "Imperiosus", Imperius has more germanic etymology, particularly following the pattern in old english of turning Latin words into english ones by dropping the "os" from "osus" to create adjectives. Imperius Rex!" It sure sounds cool. Namor's saying he's top dog, pretty much. Imperius is power, empire, while rex means king. Stan Lee did his homework. During his time among the Nazis, Mister Sinister created a clone of Namor (Experiment N2) to fight Captain America. Unstoppable Rage: A lot, but if you really want to see it in full force, refer to any time he runs into Llyra, who killed his first wife and was responsible for the death of his father. In the 1990s, Sub-Mariner again had his own comic book series by writer/artist John Byrne, who reinvented Namor as a shrewd businessman after establishing that his rages were caused by an imbalance of oxygen in his blood that could be treated. Namor bought a surface company called Oracle using treasures rescued from the sea. This series lasted for 62 issues (April, 1990-May, 1995). Since then the character mostly appears in team books and the occasional mini-series.The story is set in the Cold War age just before the introduction of the Sub-Mariner to Marvel Universe. It centers on an expedition to the Marianas Trench to recover a lost submarine captain named Marlowe who is obsessed with discovering Atlantis. It is highly reminiscent of your "Heart of Darkness" or "Apocalpyse Now" storyline. The main character of the story is a Professor Stein. A world reknowned scientist intent on debunking the mysteries and mythes across the globe. Stein's mission to find Capt. Marlowe finds him on a submarine with a motley crew of "deep-men" as they call themselves; veterans if you will of the vast ocean deep. Many theories abound over the disappearance of Marlowe and his sub. At the forefront is the discussion of the dreaded Sub-Mariner, protector of Atlantis. Incidents begin to occur that the crew is convinced is the work of this inhuman creature. After a disagreement with the rest of the team, Johnny Storm hides out in a rough part of town. That’s where he meets a homeless man who turns out to be an amnesiac Namor, The Sub-Mariner. However, when Namor’s memories return to him, he causes havoc on the surface world. A kind that only the Fantastic Four can stop. This was very much like a 60s horror film (in a good way), and actually reminded me a lot of The Lighthouse with Robert Pattinson. It’s also very different from most Marvel comics, and I applaud branching out and trying different types of stories. Those silent moments of awe, fear, guilty understanding, and instability and questioning yourself is all what worked for me.

Tamara Rahn was an extraterrestrial and member of the water breathing Banari race from the planet Laab. The planet was destroyed, but she escaped on a craft which headed for the oceans of Earth. Admiring the Abomination: Dr. Stein does it once he fully spots Namor ◊. Namor, understandably, isn't amused ◊. Ambiguous Time Period: An unusual examples in regards to "The Depths", we know this version of Namor is living in the 1950's, we just don't know when in the 1950's. With the mention of Edmund Hillary's yeti footprint photograph in 1952, the extent of our knowledge is that it is post-1952 that this version of Namor is living in. King Crab was a member of King Namor's Defenders of the Deep, a team established to accommodate to his new policies regarding relationships between the ocean and the surface world.
