These sentences also bear certain familiar tell-tale signs, expressed in three charges against Hodge: that he presupposes a 'subject-object dichotomy' in which the mind observes facts (which are in some sense mind-independent), and in which the situation of the interpreter is irrelevant. Coming Soon: Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley, Reformed Systematic Theology: Volume One: Revelation and God (March 2019) (the first volume of a multi-volume work) and Robert Letham, Systematic Theology (November 2019).

This four-volume work deserves more attention than it normally receives, for it combines the mature fruit of Protestant Scholasticism with the rich piety of the Dutch Second Reformation. The ESV Study Bible has significant articles on all the major loci, while the new ESV Systematic Theology Study Bible links up theological reflection with the text of Scripture. It is the fundamental principle of all sciences, and of theology among the rest, that theory is to be determined by facts, and not facts by theory. At the encouragement of Archibald Alexander, he enrolled at Princeton Theological Seminary, graduating with the class of 1819.

The idea that the data of Scripture are instances of data of a natural scientific kind is not one that Hodge entertained. And hence, when philosophers themselves become Christians, they are compelled, indeed, to abandon their erroneous doctrines, but not their dress and mode of living, which are no obstacle to religion. Second, that Hodge is said to work with a 'dichotomy' between fact and theory, not taking any account of the theory-ladenness of data.Besides the mental principles used in natural science, the theologian appeals to other naturally-implanted principles. Nevertheless it leaves the reader with a seriously misleading and even unintelligible account of the Princeton theologian's method. Under his editorship, it became the leading theological journal of the nineteenth century: Hodge’s personal contributions included articles on biblical studies, spirituality, church history and historical theology, ecclesiological issues, philosophy, politics, slavery, abolition and the Civil War.

This version is a careful abridgment of Hodge's three-volume systematic theology in a convenient single volume. p.9) This is similar to induction in the natural sciences in assuming the trustworthiness of sense perceptions, of mental operations, and of truths not learned from experience but which are given in our human constitution. Having been in print since 1872, this book has served as a primary textbook in many leading seminaries. So, I heartily recommend to you this three-volume work from the 1870s, Hodge's Systematic Theology, written by the second professor of Systematic Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, Charles Hodge. On his tombstone, and he's there in the Princeton Cemetery and the Princeton Seminary Row, it says on his tombstone, "The second professor of Systematic Theology at the Princeton Theological Seminary.Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH). In my estimation, this appraisal says more about the egalitarian views of Hodge’s biographer than of Hodge himself (251–55). Unfortunately it contains some inaccuracies: Hodge does not say that Scripture offers us no 'scientific theology', but rather that the beginnings of such theology are to be found in the New Testament epistles.
