The idea that the data of Scripture are instances of data of a natural scientific kind is not one that Hodge entertained. And hence, when philosophers themselves become Christians, they are compelled, indeed, to abandon their erroneous doctrines, but not their dress and mode of living, which are no obstacle to religion. In my estimation, this appraisal says more about the egalitarian views of Hodge’s biographer than of Hodge himself (251–55). Unfortunately it contains some inaccuracies: Hodge does not say that Scripture offers us no 'scientific theology', but rather that the beginnings of such theology are to be found in the New Testament epistles.
