This was frustrating and coming so soon after another unresolved ending - in The Van Apfel Girls Are Gone by Felicity McLean - the frustration was compounded. Also I realise that the point of the novel is probably Rose’s journey and self discovery and not what actually happened to certain characters. Warned by her father of Connie’s ruthless charm, Rose adopts a pseudonym, stepping into her new role as Laura Brown. While for the most part I really appreciated Burton's prose, I soon grew wary of the odd way in which she would suddenly turn to saccharine language (for example in expressing the 'anguish' experienced by Rose and Elise). And not telling her ex-boyfriend is made to seem like some sort of feminist choice rather than a crappy move.

Most of the romantic relationships were rather unconvincing and never gave the impression that the characters actually cared or loved one another Elise's seems to rely on Connie, and Connie. Whilst The Confession is undoubtedly a feminist novel, she is not afraid to depict her female characters as flawed or uncertain about their lives. If I had one tiny criticism it would be one section where Rose is reading one of Connie’s books and it’s like we’re in a GCSE English class being spoon-fed. com/books/2023/mar/17/carnegie-medal-for-writing-announces-all-female-shortlist "Carnegie medal for writing announces all-female shortlist"].In the golden city of Amsterdam, in 1705, Thea Brandt is turning eighteen, and she is ready to welcome adulthood with open arms. While the 80s are evoked more through costume than cadence – think shoulder pads and fuchsia pantsuits – the 21st century is characterised by anxiety and fatigue. Into this fragile paradise come artist and revolutionary Isaac Robles and his half-sister Teresa, who immediately insinuate themselves into the Schloss family, with explosive and devastating consequences.

Jest da joj je otac, kao jedina obitelj, odselio u Francusku i jest da joj see najbolja prijateljica posvetila podizanju obitelji, ali to nije ništa što bi Rosin život obojilo lošim bojama. Elise was boring, apart from her ‘good looks’, Connie was arrogant and soulless and Rose was the most aimless 30-something I’ve read in a long time - and not in a good way. As the two stories merge, and the truth about what happened to Elise is slowly revealed, Burton has great fun skewering both the ersatz glamour of 80s Hollywood and our present world of carefully curated lives online. I loved this book from start to finish and I would like to express my thanks for the privilege of reading this ARC. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in unexpected ways .There are many issues raised in this book that women face on a day to day basis and how they shape the person you become.

She follows Connie to LA, but in this city of strange dreams and razzle-dazzle, Elise feels even more out of her depth and makes an impulsive decision that will change her life forever.psihologije), nudi nam pregršt toga, cijeli švedski stol mogućnosti, a mi proberemo ono što nam treba i to razvijemo u zaista vrijedne stvari u sebi. Because Burton never judges; rather she lays out a variety of ways of being and the challenges that may come with making honest choices. My final gripe is how pretentious this novel felt - almost lecturing the reader at points with over-intellectualised, and what is set up to be, ‘groundbreaking’ conversations between characters. The story alternates between the 2 timelines as we discover what happened to Elsie and will Rosie ever meet her mom.
