I have to be because I have ichthyosis, whereby my cell turnover is extremely rapid and results in dry, flaky skin that can become sore. We caught up with Sali before the release of her latest book, Everything is Washable* and Other Life Lessons (4th estate, 15th September) to discover her best beauty hacks and just why she decided to launch her very own skincare range. Although it sometimes felt a bit jumbled, the advice is split in to helpful categories and the index helps too. Was lucky to go and hear Sali Hughes' wise words in person (in possibly the best-coiffed, most fragrant talk I've been to).

I never fail to hear her voice narrating to me in my head while I read, such is her distinctive style of writing. Biography: Sali Hughes is a leading journalist, presenter and broadcaster with over 24 years' experience.But this book gets even worse as the author dispenses "advice" on abortions , breastfeeding and depression which is inappropriate and she is totally unqualified to do so.

I don't think there's anything wrong with people wanting to look after their skin and chasing some of the characteristics that they had two years ago or five years ago. They felt like serious manuals from a person who knew more about the thing they were sharing than you did. The content could have been so easily contained in a short pamphlet - Wear sunscreen, don't be a slave to fashion and this is how you cook pasta. Sali Hughes offers striking good sense on: home food and drink, fashion health and beauty life and finances friends, relationships and family.My favourites are Charlotte Tilbury’s The Classic Dark Brown Powder Eye Pencil, which has a foolproof and very flattering softness to it, the Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal in ‘Cocoa’ (you need to leave it a minute to set before blending) and Hindash's Eye Tone in ‘Intra’. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. That’s why I spent two years creating my own skincare line – my friends were telling me they were confused by modern skincare. There are interesting parts, but then she’s off telling us to dry clean brand new clothes, or giving awful advice on serious personal issues. However, this was a very enjoyable read, I like Sali's style and all her Pool Columns, some of which are repeated here.

If there is anyone's advice I'm going to follow with regard to skincare and beauty purchases, it is hers.Inspired in style, if not tone, by her love of 1950s housewife compendiums, the expansive guide is divided into chapters dedicated to the home, food and drink, fashion, health and beauty, life and finances, and friends, relationships and family. Also, freeze as much as possible: nuts, bananas (out of their skins), chopped onions, mash, spinach, pastry, egg whites, leftover wine for cooking, peas, herbs, veg offcuts – the list goes on. Basic beauty questions still come up when I talk to friends, or engage with followers on social media and readers.
