Description

Often sombre, only ever darkly comic, Moving is a compelling, compassionate and keenly observed evocation of family dynamics, time and place. Ho apprezzato molto il suo stile delicato che sa accogliere e accompagnare il lettore lungo tutta la durata del romanzo.

On the surface the story is one of hedonistic rich kids, that one has little sympathy for, yet underneath it is one of growing up, of discovering ones self, of love and ultimately loss. In 1995, she became the first female solo winner of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival's Perrier Comedy Award. We explore from room to room, including Edwina’s now unused studio – she was a successful illustrator.I was a little disappointed when the book went into Fern's section it seemed to drag a little so I was pleased when it got to the section on Lucas who we'd already had hints on being the twist in the story. I feel too strongly about Charlie and am still, hours after finishing, upset, not just for the sad things that happen to him, but because of the sheer injustice. The only way it would be possible is if it’s so true to life you could believe that the events being described had actually happened to that person.

I think I had a preconceived notion that I would get a light, fluffy chick lit read with a heroine dripping with sarcasm and, in fact, nothing could have been further from the truth. Yes, true, there were moments that the novel felt a little flat and too slow, but altogether, the way it was told, the characters, events and surprises defended themselves and "Moving" was intriguing, hooking read. Addressing issues associated with ‘yuppiedom’, politics and the original ‘entitled’ generation, the story line moves towards a moderately hopeful yet pretty realistic conclusion.

After she moved to London, Eclair's first job was at Camberwell Arts College as a life model, which she did for about two terms. Something long anticipated - I am told that it is stated clearly at some point that Lucas admits he lied about Charlie and the drugs. It is the fourth novel from the comedian, who has published three other successful novels; Camberwell Beauty, Having a Lovely Timeand Life, Death and Vanilla Slicesin her varied career. Of course, when Edwina pulls herself out of the bath on page one and looks at the tiny silver-haired woman in the mirror, the reader is thinking of Jenny Eclair, the name they’ve just seen displayed larger than the title on the front cover.

There were happy and sad moments in a compelling story that gets just a little darker the more you read on.The delicately observed family dynamics help to pull the reader in, spiking an interest in the tragedy that is at the centre of the story. She has her finger in many pies from teaching to being a senior library consultant at Consilium Education to being executive editor at NotesVilla. So we meet Edwina who has come to the conclusion she can no longer live in her huge house now she's on her own. Questa casa è intrisa fino allo scheletro del nostro sangue, del nostro sudore, dell’amore, delle risate, dei tradimenti.
