When I brought home and they got a glimpse of the new cover they were hooked! The bright splashes of colors are vibrant, with arresting 3-dimensional illustrations of a different crew of characters. Their eyes grew wide as we opened the box and extracted the contents, particularly The Zombie Hunters Guide. Hit Z Road: The genre takes a sharp left turn where players bid for the most optimal route while driving cross-country across a zombified USA. But as my boys got older (currently they’re 10, 8, and 6) their desire to play the original Zombie Kidz diminished. So picture my delight when I started seeing talk of a sequel of sorts, especially one which was billed as the first legacy game for kids! But wait – didn’t you mention something about this being an evolving, Legacy-style game?’ I hear you ask. I sure did, attentive reader! Zombie Kidz Evolution brings all the excitement of a legacy game to a family friend co-op. Opening the box you will find a series of sealed numbered envelopes, which you will be tempted to open straight away. Resist your urges though as these envelopes contain gameplay elements that you will earn the more you play. Best of all this legacy game is totally playable at the end - no destroying any components here!

During Pandemic time in 2020, my kids lost a lot of activities and I tried hard to find something to keep them busy and entertained. This game is a great help! My 6 year old and 8 year old were able to play together independently without fighting! So some of the highlights of the game that me and my kids like about: Dead of Winter features a number of cooperative scenarios, along with an optional secret traitor. Each survivor must work together to keep their fledgling colony alive by scavenging for resources in the surrounding buildings, saving survivors and building barricades, while secretly furthering their personal ambitions, whether they align with the rest of the group or not. I’d never played a legacy game before ripping the shrink wrap off Zombie Kidz Evolution. For those that aren’t aware a legacy game is one which changes as you play. They are generally not replayable as the game evolves quite dramatically over the course of the game. Despite being a popular mechanic, legacy game offerings are scarce on the market. Zombie Kidz Evolution is aimed at children, and I wouldn’t recommend playing it with just grownups. Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed playing the majority of rounds with my boys. All three of my boys have played it without me too. The turn phase and objective is simple enough for my six year old to fathom. A minor downside personally is this is a four player game and there is five of us, so we either need to partner up or someone needs to find something else to do. This adds a really fun element of anticipation and suprise to the game. I’m not going to spoil what’s inside the envelopes, but they do add extra layers of complexity at a manageable pace – just at the point where you perhaps figure that you’ve got the zombies under control. The good thing is that these extra components and rules are entirely optional if players find that they make the game too difficult or frustrating.

Younger folk in the family will love the excitement of opening up these envelopes to see what’s inside and then immediately want to try out the new stuff. Which is doable as each game takes around 15 minutes. But how does it compare to the original” you might ask? I’ll be honest, while the game play is roughly the same, the difference is night and day, like comparing a minivan to a muscle car. From the next paragraph onwards my thoughts contain some minor spoilers, but if you want to avoid all spoilers then here’s what you need to know: Zombie Kidz Evolution is a huge improvement and strengthening of what was already a fun children’s co-operative game. Zombie Dice Roll to eat more brains than shotgun blasts Become the zombie and try to keep your head in this fast and furious dice game. Gameplay doesn't get much simpler than Zombie Dice, which consists of one cup and 13 dice. Players take turns rolling three random dice from the cup, trying to eat as many brains as possible while avoiding shotgun blasts - the zombies' natural predator.

And Thus Begins Zombie Kidz Evolution

On the strategy level, new abilities keep the game fresh and ever changing. It starts slow and simple, and each envelope adds a layer of complexity, but the progression is gradual and allows children to work their way up to a quite complex game one step at a time. The changes never feel unfair, and you won’t always win. But we never find it frustrating. The game also offers a variety of ways to play. One side of the board is for two players, one side is for 3-4 players and changes how you can move about the board. My youngest really enjoys just playing with dad, so it works well. In Zombie Kidz Evolution (2018), you fought to rid your school of the roaming zombie teachers and bar the gates. Zombie Teenz Evolution (2020) continues the story: The school is your safe base but your town is still in danger of being run over by zombies. You have to find the antidote! You start out easy City of Horror knows it's not enough just to survive during the zombie apocalypse - we also need to establish a society. We won't be passing civic policies or nominating representatives, however; we'll be voting on who gets fed to the zeds. Zombie Kidz Evolution is the first Legacy-style game I’m aware of that’s aimed at younger players. Though, thematically at least, it may seem that zombies are more suited to a more adult experience, in practice – and thanks to some beautifully colourful and appealingly kid-friendly graphic design work – it works just fine.

Including the clones in the game added another level of strategy because while your clone is active you’re able to move it as a second piece on your turn. The downside is that you lose the use of your special ability. And because clones are added to and removed from the board when you roll a white face on the die, there were plenty of times when you were actually disappointed to roll a white. Final Thoughts: Zombie Kidz Evolution Stole My Heart (and Both Kidneys) A lot of the actions and mechanics are similar to Kidz but changed enough to make Teenz a distinct experience. The story elements do not influence play as it would in, for example, Pandemic Legacy. Zombie Teenz Evolution is not a linear, narrative game. But the little bits of comic add flavour and context, which is an enjoyable new dimension to the game. Final thoughts

Tiny Epic Zombies recreate the classic mall survival scenario, with locations, weapons, heroes and meeples squeezed into the series’ signature tiny box. Like many horror subgenres, zombie films are often loved in spite of - or even because of - their cheesiness, whether it’s poor acting, a brain-dead plot, gratuitous violence and nudity, or all of the above. I got this game because my cousin is 13 years old and there might be just enough time for him to enjoy the "kid" version of this. There is Zombie Teenz, but I wanted to play through this game while we still could. We play games regularly and his go-to game is Memoir '44. His thinking skills however still needs improvement, and my husband and I do not go easy on him. I thought it might be good to try some easier kid games, since we jumped into board games that I'm mainly interested in and mostly bypassed all the kid games. Do not be put off by the legacy element of Zombie Kidz Evolution. Hours, upon hours of family fun can be had with this superb board game that has been a massive hit with our three boys. We really do recommend it!

The special powers complemented each other quite well, which is great because while using the special powers you’re forced to add two zombies on your turn instead of one. This really changed the math and meant that at the end of your turn you needed to make sure there were at least two zombies available to be placed. While some of the games on this list include player-controlled zombies, all of them include survivors battling against the zombie threat. But what if we just wanted to be a bunch of zom-bros having a night out on the town? All four paused for a moment to give mental thanks for the success of their friends just days ago. The closing of Cedar Grove Cemetery had almost completely removed the undead presence in the town of Briar Glen. There was only one nest of infected left, and the responsibility for defeating it fell on their shoulders. Unfortunately rumors indicated that some of the remaining creatures were…different than the others, more dangerous.A light legacy game for kids that, just like in a real zombie apocalypse, requires everyone around the table to work together to survive.
