All of the new TVs support at least HDR10 and HLG, with further additions as you rise up the price list. As you can guess, the first two digits relate to the screen size, with the P reflecting the LCD product line (you’ll note it changes to C for the QLED and Mini LED models). Rather than using a letter to reflect the yearly updates like many of its competitors, TCL increases the Series number, so last year’s P62 and C82 ranges, for example, become P63 and C83 in 2022. This is the followed with a further digit cementing each model’s place in the Series (the P638 ranked above the P635 and RP630), and the last letter denoting the region (with K being the UK). The ‘Film’ image mode is also excellently calibrated. The gray scale has a little bit of red in excess, but that is hardly visible in practice. The color rendering is excellent. Considering the improvements in terms of contrast and dimming, these are very strong performances. The 65C835 will be ‘Calman Ready’ later this year so it can be calibrated automatically. The likes of the P638 may have similar alternatives or see tweaks to the features list in different regions. TCL 2022 TV line-up

faq - TCL

It drops things down to 60Hz with de-judder and Motion Clarity Pro, with the older IPQ processor using Machine Learning with SR rather than the Deep Learning capacity of those before it. You’ll also have to settle for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ with Dolby Vision IQ also limited to the C735 and above, but neither is a great loss if you don’t really need it. One that won’t be made familiar to everyone, the RC630K is a UK-exclusive QLED running Roku TV that is likely to be available from September (or shortly thereafter). It has many of the same features as the C635, including HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, along with the Onkyo sound system, albeit using Dolby Audio rather than Atmos, but there are a few other notable differences. I should stress that these colour issues only crop up with bright HDR10 scenes/image areas. Dark HDR10 shots and scenes look pretty normal where colours are concerned – although, ultimately, this just makes the excesses with bright scenes all the more glaring.TCL’s televisions can differ by market, especially between UK/Europe and the models that appear in the US and Australia. This year we gather that the European and UK versions of the C835 will be technically identical (the previous C825 had a key difference in the UK), while Australia got to meet the new range first, with the C835 range officially available from 1 June 2022. The soundbar manages to radiate sound up as well as forward, creating at least a vague sense of height with Dolby Atmos mixes – although there aren’t really any specific overhead effects to speak of.

The 65C815K exhibits mixed fortunes with its contrast. Watching it in a dark room using its out-of-the-box presets, three contrast points immediately stood out: two good, one bad.Offering a notably different feature set to the formidable C Series Mini LEDs, these 4K HDR models still have plenty to offer, including a large selection of screen sizes along with a price tag that might be smaller than your latest energy bill. The P735 sits at the top of this sub-section, with the same switch to Android TV for UK users as with the C635 before and the P638 to follow. The remote control is worthy of praise, kept nicely simple, with those six service-specific one-touch keys and a top circle to activate voice control. The C835 does also have an enhanced audio system, with a 2.1 Onkyo sound system using down-firing 3-way speakers, along with a built-in woofer also offering support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, along with Adaptive Sound. It also comes with all of the other compatibility and accessibility features of the C935 using the same Google TV platform but with the added option of a 55-inch model. The C815 features both the major dynamic metadata HDR formats Dolby Vision and HDR10+ as well as normal HDR10 content. There is also an Onkyo 2.1 soundbar at the bottom of the screen and the TCL supports Dolby Atmos decoding with ARC support via HDMI 1 and the C815 also supports DTS audio. Particularly welcome is how well the sound swells forward and out from the built-in soundbar. This provides far more impact and detail than the more ‘swallowed’ effect you typically get with TVs that house all their speakers behind their screens.

TCL TV C835K - 4K Mini LED 144hz QLED Google TV Onkyo 2.1

The most glaring example of this mixed-bag performance comes from its colours. With some sources and settings its QLED-driven colours are strikingly good, achieving saturations and volumes seldom if ever seen at the 65C815K’s price point. But at other times its colours go what’s probably best described as ‘off road’. There are a number of unusual elements to the 65C815K’s reasonably attractive design. First, it features a very obvious, blue-tinted soundbar hanging from its bottom edge. This wears the branding of renowned Japanese audio brand Onkyo, raising hopes this might be the rarest of things: an affordable TV with a built-in sound system that doesn’t sound horrible. You could also take a similar approach to the Movie mode settings, if you don’t mind colours looking quite substantially flatter. The 2.1 Onkyo sound system provides 70W of power through two forward-firing drivers, and one large bass radiator on the rear. There’s built-in Dolby Atmos decoding, too.The C93, C83 and C73 Series all use the new Ai PQ2.0 processor, using Deep Learning with Super Resolution upscaling.
