Factory Reset What stands out most is the size of the sensor. Shelly’s Motion is big and heavy. It’s nicely designed so it’s not ugly, but it will be instantly visible thanks to its size and (optional) LED embedded inside the PIR shell. The reason why Shelly Motion is so big is the internal battery that lets the PIR sensor connect to the network for a year (or more) on a single charge. What I really like about Shelly Motion2 is the fact that it comes with Shelly Cloud and a web interface. It means you get to choose how you take advantage of the sensor. In the typical scenario, where the sensor is connected to Shelly Cloud, you can interact with it via the app, connect it to Alexa and Google Home via relevant skills and use it as a trigger for motion, temperature range, vibration and light. Shelly® devices can be accessed, controlled and monitored remotely from any place where the User has internet connectivity, as long as the devices are connected to a Wi-Fi router and the Internet.

But neither the battery nor the new design is the most impressive new thing here. At least for me the most impressive new feature in Shelly Motion 2 is the embedded temperature sensor that immediately provides more opportunities for home automations. So, if you buy the Shelly Motion 2 Sensor you actually getting 4 useful sensors. Which are: One battery-operated device delivers all that data that lasts up to a year on a single charge (Li-ion 3.7 V / 6500 mAh). As the device is straight from the production line, I can’t verify the claim, but I had it running for over a week now and it still reports 100%. That’s promising. What’s nice is the included USB-C port for easy charging. Using the homeassistant.update_entity service for an entity belonging to a battery-powered device is not possible because most of the time these devices are sleeping (are offline). CAUTION! Use only charging adapters that comply with USB-C standard. Do not charge the Device if the charging adapter or the charging cable are damaged. Prior to using the Shelly Motion 2, please fully charge its battery by plugging the USB Type-C charging adapter cable into the Device charging port.

The main sensor of the Shelly Motion2 – a highly customisable motion sensor capable of detecting motion up to 9m – is enough to cover most of the household areas. The minimum timeout for the motion is 1min, which may not be as impressive as a 1-sec timeout on ZigBee-based Aqara Motion P1, but the device comes with interesting trigger options. Input the number of consecutive movements (from 1 to 4) for the sensor to detect before reporting motion. Shelly Motion 2 (the Device) is a high-sensitivity, ultra-low power consumption Wi-Fi motion sensor, which also features light and temperature metering. The built-in light and temperature sensors provide additional opportunities for home or office automation. Shelly Motion 2 also has an integrated accelerometer for tamper protection and features vibration detection. The built-in 6500 mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery allows the Device to stay connected to the Internet in standby mode for up to 3 years, and in active transmission (approx. 6 hours/day motion detection) estimated between 12 and 18 months without recharging.
