I have always been a big fan of the Skulduggery Pleasant universe and book series and so it's always nice to have new releases following the end of a Phase of the main books even though this wasn't anything incredible or innovative, it did keep me entertained and having a good time whilst I read it.

Hell Breaks Loose by Derek Landy | Waterstones

Three-hundred years before the story begins... the story begins. Set in Tuscany, Italy, 1703, during the War, Hell Breaks Loose focuses on an enraged Skulduggery, 13 years after being killed with his wife and child by Serpine and resurrected as a living skeleton, and three years after his five years as Lord Vile, as he and the Dead Men hunt down Serpine and Vengeous, the Generals of Mevolent. The Button: (7.5–8) Set after Theatre of Shadows: Skulduggery and Valkyrie attempt to avert the cause of the world's destruction. Derek Landy announced on 14 December 2012 that from 21 to 22 December, a short story relating to the Mayan 2012 apocalypse theory would be available on his blog, titled The Button. It was eventually included in the short story collection. [35] The fact that it is one day after the release date and this book is already controversial says a lot to begin with, but I would like to start by saying; I do not dislike this book. In fact, I quite enjoyed it. I think that we all came up with a vision in our heads over the last 15 books of what a prequel would look like, and what we got, at least in my case, went quite far from what I expected. I don't think that that is a good or a bad thing, but it does seem to be classic Derek fashion. We learn this from the Masked Sisters, their Sensitives, and the Sanctuary Sensitives have also confirmed this. The sister that the Masked Sisterhood sent are; Sister Rapture (who Ghastly has this thing with 😏), Sister Stone (secret identity girl. More on her later), and Sister Zeal (who later changes her mind about being a Masked Sister). Anyways, we know who is the would-be murderer, and so they go about tryna stop him. A loada stuff happen, but then Mevolent opens the portal, and the murderer jumps in. And then turns powerful or something like that. Apparently it was the 'Hidden God's that was on the other side, and this dude happened to be a follower. Then Sister Zeal is pushed in, and she becomes a fanatic as well. A nice thing for me was that he had a boyfriend, Anselm, that was mentioned and talked about. Their relationship and how it ended just seemed so believable, so truthful. (Not to mention the fact that we love good queer representation.)

How to read the Skulduggery Pleasant Books in Order?

This story wasn't what I expected, while simultaneously being precisely what I should have seen coming. Once it gets into the swing of things, it's the classic action-adventure I fell in love with as a child, alongside the good old-fashioned drama and comedy that my adult self appreciates even more so. I would be interested in seeing where this goes as it does set up a potential plotline for a potential Phase 3 while also managing to wrap up the main conflict of the book well but I will admit that while the character dynamics were still strong and it was entertaining and enjoyable to read, I did find that the humour and trademark Skulduggery Pleasant charm was missing from this one. Maybe it's because I've expanded my taste and knowledge with books meaning I can recognise that the writing is much simpler than I remember or I'm not looking at it with rose-tinted glasses. Friday Night Fights: (3–4) Sometime before Dark Days, The story of how Valkyrie Cain and Caelan met each other. A writer at the height of his powers . . . Whatever your age, read them and enjoy the ride.” - Irish Independent During the fight with Serpine in the Sanctuary, Stephanie glimpsed her True name in the Book of Names but could not remember it before the Book of Names was destroyed. Skulduggery destroyed Serpine with the Scepter, breaking the Scepter's power in the process. Afterward, Skulduggery offered to take Stephanie on as his assistant and apprentice because she is a descendant of the Ancients. Stephanie decided to take the name of Valkyrie Cain.

In fact, I really enjoyed a lot of it. The whole idea of a prequel worked surprisingly great: Lots of characters you know and love - but with a twist, because it's set in the early 18th century and much of the later character development hasn't happened yet. (Also, you get to revisit some favourites that got killed off, which is awesome.) The whole thing centers around the Dead Men, so hilarity happens. Four stars for the conversations, five stars for Ghastly's wonderful POV, three stars for the plot, and four stars for the historical setting. There is no expense spared by Landy in this book and I would have to say that everyone who could be bothered to read it, would definitely be drawn into it and certainly enjoy it. (...) Something for everyone and everything for someone, Skulduggery Pleasant is easily my book of the year so far. Read it! [45] Valkyrie's appearance in the book was unnecessary, and felt out of place. It was fun seeing the Valkyrie and Skulduggery interact as the dynamic between them is always great, but i think it took away focus from the dynamics between the dead men.

What is the Skulduggery Pleasant series about?

Last Stand of Dead Men – War has finally come. But it’s not a war between good and evil, or light and dark – it’s a war between Sanctuaries. For too long, the Irish Sanctuary has teetered on the brink of world-ending disaster, and the other Sanctuaries around the world have had enough. Allies turn to enemies, friends turn to foes, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie must team up with the rest of the Dead Men if they’re going to have any chance at all of maintaining the balance of power and getting to the root of a vast conspiracy that has been years in the making. Skulduggery author, Derek Landy on the accidental reveal of the ending of his new book". Irish Examiner. 25 March 2021. I loved Erskine's descriptions ("most loyal", "too honest a face") because it adds even more depth to his character. (I really like him - you can fight me on that.) In case you were wondering, Dexter's the most honest, Saracen's the most charming, Ravel is the most loyal and you are the most decent."

Eh, not a fan to be completely honest. The first half was awesome and interesting, but I didn't love the twist. I'm not that much of a fan of time-travel that doesn't have any real effects (that we know of). I like how they all handled and adapted to the situation but just the fact that Valkyrie was there felt a bit forced to me. The story follows Valkyrie and Skulduggery going to America to investigate a witch. It introduces the concept of "Horts", essentially people outside of the fictional universe who consume entertainment (that is actually real in the fictional world) and have choices as to what happens. I was hoping to see Skulduggery without Valkyrie, to learn more about the Dead Men and read a story that had a real impact on who Skulduggery is today, perhaps one of the many stories hinted at in the books, something that made the Dead Men, the Dead Men, y’know? And this isn’t that. Really, this is less a prequel and more a time travel adventure. I fell off Skulduggery Pleasant during the second phase due to a mix of time and not vibing with the new stories, but I was attracted at the idea of a prequel focusing on Skulduggery's adventures with the Dead Men- I distinctly recall hearing about Derek Landy mentioning this would be a story years before Valkyrie entered the picture, and I thought a standalone novel would be a fun side-adventure, given how long the fanbase had been asking for a story focused on the Dead Men. After this Sister Rapture and Sister Stone are devastated. But THEN we find that Sister Stone is in fact Valkyrie (ik, SURPRISE!!) from the future. And she had some vision that this dude (i still don't remember his name) would change reality or something. My memory is terrible. But future Skulduggery told future Valkyrie to go to the past and kill this dude whose lifeline is attached to the murdemy German copy of the faceless ones arrived and turns out they have different titles than normal. I google translated it and I think it's kinda hilarious. In June 2011 Landy posted on his blog that he would be writing a short story about Skulduggery called The End of the World. [29] It was released in late February 2012 to coincide with World Book Day 2012. The Australian release of this novella came with an additional short story titled Just Another Friday Night. Deleted scenes from Skulduggery Pleasant were included. It is set a few months after Death Bringer. It was included in the 2014's short story collection. The Horror Writers' Halloween Ball: 1986: (–1) Gordon Edgley and Skulduggery Pleasant attend the party of the enigmatic Sebastian Fawkes. Seasons of War – War is coming. To avert catastrophe, Skulduggery and Valkyrie are sent on a secret mission that takes them away from everything they know, to a forsaken land of magic and grim, unrelenting terror. It is here that Valkyrie will have to fight the hardest — not only against the enemies who want her dead, but also against her own self-destructive impulses. It’s only by crawling through the darkness that she’ll be able to once again stand in the light… I also don't really like reading about Valkyrie anymore. I think the character's grown to a point where no other magic is necessary, because hey, Valkyrie can do ALL the magic and in-universe rules don't apply to her. That takes almost all tension away, because you can guess that when in doubt, Valkyrie will just discover that she can do another awesome thing (see: time travel, healing herself, being a Sensitive...).
