I won't review the book as I have done already (paperback) but this radio production was wonderful and of great quality. I knew the plotline already, of course, but even then… I just can’t engage with spoken word stories the same way I can with the written word. All standard Grimm and Disney with some new bells and whistles until Gaiman’s wickedly inventive talent takes the wheels off and we get something new and interesting. The Sleeper and the Spindle isn’t the first retelling to stray away from the ”boy-kisses-girl” bias of traditional fairytales.

The fairy tale is a whirl wind of adventure keeping the story from any boring parts, since it is known as the abridge version. It was quite interesting to see this story in two different forms of media: an illustrated novel/picture book and a full-cast dramatisation.Neil Gaiman's prose and Chris Riddell's drawings mesh precisely, and their latest collaboration should appeal to a wide range of readers. This queen will decide her own future - and the princess who needs rescuing is not quite what she seems. If you're looking for a book to be the answer to your lady-loving fairytale prayers, then this is not the book you're looking for. Few adults will be greatly surprised by the tweaks in plot, but no matter: one isn’t with traditional tellings either. Brave and resilient, she battles through numerous challenges and sacrifices herself to save her people.
