It's a picaresque buddy comedy, one of the oldest literary forms: its narrator (who, like Noll and Kim's narrators, is nameless) and his sidekick, El Autista, roam a dystopian Cuba, just like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza roamed 16th-century Spain. This piece of data is crucial to the novel because both the mother and daughter are part of this contingent workforce. in " The BookBrowse Review" - BookBrowse's membership magazine, and in our weekly " Publishing This Week" newsletter. The coming together of the three women to see Jen through her life’s final rites symbolizes their metamorphosis into family.

Concerning My Daughter by Kim Hye-Jin | Goodreads

Una lectura que toca diversos temas, pero el foco principal está en la idea de aceptación, tanto en el sentido orientación sexual, como sobre la vejez, los cambios, entre otras cosas. All I did was sit here in this spot where I could look up at the altar, run my hands over these words that I feared others might hear, and let the silence grow. The mother’s precarious economic condition as an aide in a nursing home is shared by her coworkers, including a single mother with an aging parent also in care, and by the mother’s tenants, which includes an unhappy family of four. Kızım Hakkında Her Şey’e başladığımda bir ebeveyn hikayesi okuyacağımı düşünmüştüm ama okudukça şunu gördüm: hepimiz her gün bir savaşın ortasına çekiliyoruz. However, Green invites her partner Lane to join them, and once they move in, the mother cannot deny reality any longer. The mother, in her 70s, as a temporarily employed caregiver and her daughter, in her mid-30s, as an adjunct faculty member. Her husband’s dead, all she has is a crumbling home, and an exhausting, insecure, low-paid job as a carer in a facility for the elderly.

The mother fights against the idea that this patient should be treated this way because she did not conform to society (the patient was a diplomat of some renown who travelled the world). Prize-winning Korean author Kim Hye-Jin's debut confronts familial love, duty, mortality, and generational schism through the incendiary gaze of a tradition-bound mother faced with her daughter's queer relationship. Kim Hye-jin lays bare our most universal fears on ageing, death, and isolation, to offer finally a paean to love in all its forms. When an ageing mother allows her thirty-something daughter to move into her apartment, she wants for her what many mothers might say they want for their child: a steady income, and, even better, a good husband with a good job with whom to start a family. The mother wants her daughter to be happy, but her vision of contentment does not align with Green’s.

Concerning My Daughter” by Kim Hye-jin “Concerning My Daughter” by Kim Hye-jin

The mother finds Jen’s choices as incomprehensible as her daughter’s choices, but at the same time admires Jen for her travels and independence. What an interesting sparse novel, told from an unlikely perspective about queer lives in Korea and investigativing other issues like ageism, elder care, and how the heteropatriarchay and capitalism fail to fulfill their promises, especially to women. At first, I thought this might be another of those rather stereotypical presentations of age versus youth which reinforces ageism, and takes a rather superficial, clichéd approach to representing the fight for LGBTQ rights.

Más allá de eso, es una lectura que disfruté y padecí en igual medida por las horribles situaciones que las tres mujeres de esta historia tienen que atravesar. Green’s involvement in a campus protest against unfair dismissals of gay colleagues throws her into deeper shambles. There she witnesses how uncaring and downright neglectful the staff is towards one of her elderly dementia patients. Kim Hye-jin packs a lot of emotion and meaning into this slim novel, showing not only personal transformation, but also how societal traditions and conventions can harm and hinder.
