Impressed with the good quality of the dry bags and the packing system which means the weight of the tent can be easily and manageably shared between two walkers. The hydrostatic head of 5000mm exceeds most other tents and puts it firmly in the same league as serious mountain tents. s two-pole design is easy to pitch and provides a robust shelter for camping in windy conditions, while the waterproof polyester flysheet is more than capable of keeping rain, sleet and snow at bay. The guy lines are a shade of burnt orange, and the combination of all these makes for a very attractive package you might want to take on a camping date. The inner storage pockets are half way along the sidewall and not in the corners by your head, like you find on most other tents.

Sturdy design, minimal faff when pitching [enjoyed a good thunderstorm in one recently with no adverse affects! The space inside is more useable than other tents I’ve looked at as the footprint is roughly rectangular instead of coffin shaped. Our go to tent over the summer has been a big single skinned teepee that I got from Tesco a few years back for the grand sum of 25 quid. Our position wasn’t too exposed but I could tell that this tent would stand ok if it was, despite not being of a semi geodesic structure. The Jackal III is definitely a fast pitch, consisting of only 2 colour coded poles, setting up at the shoreline of Loch Morlich was painless and straight forward.

This feels like a quality piece of kit and I’m still not entirely sure how they can make money selling it for just 89 quid (minus 10% forces discount).

Well lets just say that the drive to Loch Muich was rather entertaining, as was he walk from the carpark to the Loch. For a while now I’ve been thinking about getting something a bit more suited to the Cumbrian climate. Being a responsible parent, I decided against christening it with two sprogs in tow, up a mountain in the middle of nowhere.

I was used to the setup which is exactly the same as the Phoxx 1, so it was a clear choice without offending the wallet. Mid February we headed off to the Cairngorm National Park and chose to pitch up at the side of Loch Morlich. Multiple trips in Dartmoor and Snowdonia National Park which are known for their windiness, as well as the South West Coast Path and the odd garden camp during the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that you can not only split the tent between 2 people, you can also stash them on the outside of your backpacks without the need to using another dry bag. The outer fly sheet of all the OEX 2020 tent range is a rather lovely shade of green, that kind of green that helps you blend into the background.

You can have the inner door closed but the mesh panel wide open, this would be perfect for those hot sticky nights where you need a cool but done want to be bitten to death by the midges and other insects. There’s a hanging point both in the inner pod and front porch for hanging lights or head torches (that’s what we did). A recent adventure confirmed this when I awoke with the entire bottom half of my doss bag in a puddle.The reason for this is so that during windy conditions you can pitch with the back of the tent towards the bad weather. It’s not as beautifully crafted as my Stratospire 2, but for a budget tent I was pleasantly surprised at the quality.
