Description

The Sennheiser IE 300 offer excellent treble detail and clarity, particularly considering the sound isn’t particularly piercing or challenging on the ear. Their zest adds something to all kinds of music.

Sony XBA-4: the Sony has wider, more distinct, instrumental positioning, the treble is more prominent and little more sparkle. The IE 200 sounds a little more distant comparatively. The IE300 is an interesting IEM given the context of Sennheiser’s history; while much of its audiophile lineup consists of headphones tuned very specifically to please your average neutralhead audiophile, the IE300 (which is also part of said audiophile lineup) is one seemingly catered to your average V-loving mainstream audience. As such, the signature of the IE300 can be described as “V-shaped”, perhaps “U-shaped” if one considers the emphases to be further out to the extremeties. These earphones charm the ear, but their treble and upper-mids hog the limelight; they don’t allow the mids enough room in the rendering of the texture of vocals. The mid detail is there – it isn’t as soft as a pancake as it is in some lower-end earphones. But the choice to emphasise the treble and bass leaves the mids noticeably recessed in comparison to other similarly competent pairs. My sound signature preference: My preference is to have a great soundstage where the bass is impactful and delivers a punch that I can “feel” but does not over power the rest of the frequencies allowing for me to hear everything. Separation is important as well. The better tuned/balanced sound, the better. The venerable HD600, released in 1997 and based off the HD580 in 1993, later spun off to the HD650 in 2003 and then made cheaper in collaboration with Massdrop as the HD6XX in late 2018. The HD800, introduced in 2009 and then further refined into the HD800S in late 2015. The HD25, an industry staple in both the DJ and broadcasting world since 1988. And lets not forget the “concept headphone” models in the Orpheus, the HE-1, and various other “babies” in-between.

The IE300 is an IEM that feels more “Momentum” than a return to Sennheiser’s roots, which is personally mildly disappointing but at the same time, I can’t really fault the fact that they’ve made a decent IEM. It is an unapologetically fun IEM with few of the weaknesses commonly associated with V-shaped IEMs, and it’s for that reason that I find it properly competitive even within the fastidious audiophile market.MMCX Dynamic range is also very decent, impressive even, with the IE 300 able to articulate subtle nuances and sudden bursts of volume in equal measure. When Hans Zimmer’s Mountains bursts into life at the 2-minute mark, the emotion communicated through the crescendo is palpable, while all the subtle details and effects in and around the main strings and piano strikes are clean and clear. Likewise, I was impressed by how the build-up to Max Richter’s Winter 1 wasn’t totally obscured, with subtle cues in the opening string instruments loud enough to enjoy, even at lower volume. Disclaimer: The Sennheiser IE 300 IEM was sent to us by Sennheiser directly, in exchange for our honest review. Sennheiser is not related to Headfonia in any way. Sennheiser One of the first things I came across was Frank Zappa’s 1969 album Hot Rats in 24/192 resolution. It makes no sense to digitize an analog recording from more than 50 years ago at a resolution that high, but there it is. Plus, the album has one of my all-time favorite Zappa tunes, “Peaches en Regalia,” which a friend in high school transcribed from the record and arranged for our big band. It was difficult to play, but really fun!
