We challenged our purifier with airborne influenza A (H1N1 virus) at an independent lab. After 60 minutes at maximum fan speed, the airborne concentration in the chamber was reduced by 99%. Real-life efficacy may vary. As with Dyson’s other bladeless fans, hiding the motor in the base means there are no moving parts for children or pets to get hurt on, so you can leave it within reach and not have to worry about trapped fingers. The heating elements are placed inside the inner aperture as well, meaning the outside of the fan stays cool to the touch, but Dyson still suggests not touching it while in use and keeping it out of the reach of children. The heating components never surpass 200°C, that will be under the burning stage of dust so there is no stressing odor.

A superb fan heater combo with a price tag to match

The Jet Focus mode is a huge success, too. It might sound like a lot of hot air, but by any name it’s a brilliant advancement. In maximum setting. Tested for air projection, purification coverage in an 81m³ room and heating performance in a 35m³ room.

Exclusive to Dyson, Jet Focus control ensures long-range powerful airflow, or diffused mode for wide projection which mixes the surrounding air. The results lined up with what I'd experienced the night before. The AM09 raised the temperature to 70 degrees in about 10 minutes -- the Lasko heater needed 30 minutes. The AM09 hit 75 degrees after 45 minutes, while the Lasko heater needed an extra hour. The AM09 is 75% quieter than the AM05, with streamlined air channels for reduced airflow turbulence. It is the only fan heater with Quiet Mark accreditation. It also has a sleep timer, which be programmed to turn off after pre-set intervals ranging from 15 minutes to 9 hours. The fan and heater are controlled by a remote that magnetically attaches to the top of the unit. The remote was useful for changing the setting of the fan without moving from our seats, but it is the only way to control several features of the fan, so make sure you don’t lose it. Oscillation is one of the remote-controlled features and one of our favorites. The fan moves quietly along a wide arc, delivering a blast of warm air across the length of a room. It also tilts up and down so you can direct the airflow right where you need it.

For the budget-minded, there are other space heaters that heat equally as well as the Dyson and won’t bust your budget. Important Update: Look to other retailers The 3-metre power cord shouldn’t cause you an problems when it comes to plug placement, either – I found this afforded enough freedom to place the fan in any discreet but efficient location. Other Things to Consider Perhaps more impressively is how the AM09 manages to achieve this while being significantly quieter than the outgoing AM05. The improved motor is barely audible on the lowest heat setting, and only slightly louder on the lowest fan levels. We could comfortably get to sleep with the fan on a medium setting, and it didn’t prove distracting when watching TV or having a conversation during the daytime either. It’s a welcome improvment over the old model and a major selling point for anyone with a loud, traditional fan heater. We love that the cooling and heating buttons allow us to switch between fan mode and heating mode with the touch of a finger.

Despite the thermostat being contained in the base of the fan, it was accurate enough to dial down the airflow when the majority of the room had reached the desired temperature. There were a few areas where our thermometer didn’t quite measure the temperature we’d set, but it was still much warmer than ambient.

As you’ve seen, this Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link air purifier can perform many functions: ventilating, cooling, heating and sterilising. This is achieved thanks to its 2000 W power. Cleaning the air whilst creating a warm atmosphere in your room, is a worthy 2-in-1 to have. It depends on the size of your room and the difference between ambient and desired temperatures, but during our testing the AM09 got up to temperature in under five minutes. Of course, at the time of writing in mid-April, the ambient temperature of roughly 20 degrees is a world away from a cold British winter evening, so we’ll have to return to testing later in the year to see whether it maintains these speeds.

Another of the Dyson Air Purifiers that we can’t stop commenting on is the Dyson Air AM09. This air cleaner is excellent not only for sterilizing 99.95% of the air with its HEPA Glass 360 filters. Dyson's air multipliers aren't quite as captivating as they were when they first debuted, and for that reason, I'm a bit surprised that Dyson didn't do more to help the AM09 stand out against what came before. Still, it's an undeniably cool appliance. The mechanics, although precise and fine-tuned, are actually incredibly simple -- a fan in the base blows air up through the hollowed ring and out over airfoil-esque ridges that direct the heat accordingly. You can lower the desired temperature to as low as one degree, but doing so won’t actually activate the fan; you’ll need to press the cooling button and switch to fan-only mode. Switch from heating mode to cooling and you’ll also get a face full of warm air for roughly thirty seconds before the heating elements cool down and the flow of air drops in temperature.

Our Opinion

By using this specialised technology, Dyson fan heaters create a powerful stream of quiet, uninterrupted airflow, so aside from a huge improvement in air quality, you will hardly notice it's there.
