Maybe Not isn’t a sequel to Maybe Someday but is rather a companion novella following similar themes around love. The novel won a Goodreads Choice Award for best romance in 2015 and has racked up more than 400,000 reviews. I think it was five years ago, right around when I turned fourteen, when I caught her shooting up meth for the first time. If you don’t want to read this one, she has a lot of other books out too and you will be a better human for reading them.

Beyah and Samson both start as closed-off, cynical, and (Beyah especially) bitter individuals but they gradually begin to open up to become kinder and more trusting of the people around them. Beyah is very young, but in her young age she has had to go through too many bad experiences and her reality is far from being even acceptable. But after her first love comes back into the picture, things start to get a little confusing for Lily as she tries to find the right decision for her heart. While some reviewers think this novel lacked a certain edge, others rave about the book, saying it was a “beautiful” story that tugged at their heartstrings. Those relationships spoke to me more on an emotional level and I found myself wishing for their development throughout the book.

Editor’s note: Some people have suggested this novel romanticizes toxic relationships and abuse; find a list of trigger warnings here. and in part i think she helped beyah learn that her mom had a choice in the path of her life and samson had none. Picking up a Hoover novel means you’re going to be sucked into a cliched yet somehow still original page-turner that you’ll read in one sitting. samson broke down her guard and helped her realize her true worth which i think was so important and a turning point in the story!

he just went along with sara and i just loved how he it was clear was willing to do anything for sara. It’s glum, full of doom and gloom aura AND is actually set on a beach with characters actively spending time there watching sunrises and sunsets. I spent most of my childhood scared to death that I was slowly being eaten from the inside by that starving cat. I even tried eating a few bites of stuffing from inside the couch cushion, but it was too hard to swallow.

beyah’s reaction to seeing the ocean for the first time was amazing and it brought out another side to her character. I'm so glad though that Beyah still went to college and lived her life and she got into law school, what a badass. I once heard someone describe her books as something that will “make you sad the entire way but have you smiling at the page by the end” and nothing has proven more true. Published mid-2020, this YA novel follows Beyah Grim as she moves in with her estranged father, navigates grief, and finds love in an unexpected place with a boy who is her polar opposite.
