You don’t have to tie knots around the balls or do anything special to keep them in place. They will stay where they are unless you move them intentionally. Before I get to the step by step tutorial, I wanted to show the first garland I made. My office [and house in general] has a beachy theme with light colors and woodwork and sea glass green walls. I thought that using felt balls in shades of blue, green and teal would make a great complimentary garland. I liked it ok but it blended in way too much and just kind of looked a little Blah. To sew each ball in place, just put the ball on the garland as seen in the tutorial, but then take the needle and reinsert it into the top of the felt ball and sew it as if you are finishing off a thread project. Unless you are going to be moving this garland around a lot or it’s going to be handled often, you do not need to individually sew each ball into place— this also means you can easily remove all the felt balls to repurpose later.

I wanted to see where to put my command hooks, so I used washi tape to help me envision what the finished product would look like. If you want to create a garland for a full-sized Christmas tree I would suggest taking the string and measuring it out in advance before you start adding the felt balls. Make note of this length, because you’ll need to have enough string and felt balls to create a garland that long. What thread do you use for a felt ball garland? For the best results you will start off with a gentle touch, then as you work the felt into a ball and your touch will gradually become firmer.

There are so many different color options when it comes to your felt ball garland. You can buy felt pom-poms in all kinds of different colors to decorate your Christmas tree with felt pom-poms and candy canes to accentuate your holiday decorations. The basic process is to dip pieces of wool roving into warm, sudsy water and then shape into balls. Then you’ll let them dry overnight before creating your felt ball garland (you can get more details hereon the process). Using Felt Sheets or Yarn Scraps However, you can definitely make your own felt balls using roving, felt sheets, or yarn scraps. It’s more time consuming but it’s fun, especially when you can put the kids to work doing it! 😀 How to Make Felt Balls Using Roving

You can also make your balls using felt sheets (or scraps of felt sheets), or yarn scraps. The process is very similar to using the roving, but you’re going to have to work the material a little more. You’ll still want to use wool felt or wool yarn. When making a felt ball garland, it is important to first stop and consider your color scheme. What are you making it for, and what might the right colour combination be for you? Perhaps you are trying to add a bit of cheerfulness to an otherwise dull room. In this case, you might want to use a combination of bright colours to add a fun pop of color to your room. My embroidery floss got knotted into a huge mess so I unwound it and wrapped it around a piece of cardboard. It made it easier to manage for me. I wanted to make a rainbow-inspired garland that would add color and fun to my walls, so I grouped the balls into color piles.I used 15 mm felt balls for this project. If you want your felt ball garland to have a chunkier look, increase the size of your felt balls to 20 mm size or even 25 mm. To keep the garland from becoming unmanageably long, don’t cut the string any longer than 10 feet. If you want a garland that is longer than 10 feet you have two options: Wooden Beads (optional). Adding some wooden beads, or any type of beads in between your pom-poms is a fun way to mix things up. Another fun idea is to use different sizes of pom-poms so that you have a variety of shapes on your garland. It’s entirely up to you how you want to go about doing this, or if you even want to use wooden beads. Step-Sy-Step Tutorial: DIY Garland Another great option is simply to string pom-poms onto your garland so that there is no bare space in between. This means your pom-poms are resting next to each other, which will create their own spacing.

There are tons of places to buy felt balls online, or you can make your own felt balls with tutorials like this one. Before you begin, there are a few things you’ll need to decide about your garland. Determine the Length But I just recently discovered them, LOVED the look of them, and thought I’d try making one myself. How to Make a Felt Ball Garland Step 2: After you have your color pattern determined, take the string and cut your desired length. Then tie a little loop in one end, this will help you hang it later. Now, take the other end of your string, and thread it onto your large needle.

If you want to make a very long garland, after finishing the first 10 feet simply begin another 10-foot segment but cutting another thread (cut to length) and attach it by sewing it to the very last felt ball from the previous garland. Decide which style of felt ball garland you want and then sure you get enough felt balls to fill your garland accordingly. Since I wanted a wide array of different felt colors, I found it more practical to buy my felt balls already made.A Large Needle. You will also want to have a large needle, like a large embroidery needle handy. Whatever kind of string you choose to use needs to be able to fit through the eye of your large needle so that you can string the pom-poms onto your string. To start making your felt ball, hold the thinned piece of wool in the palms of your hands. Squirt a little bit of soapy water into the felt ball, then slowly work it and fold it into a ball. First, take the piece of wool in your desired color and pull it so that it is thinned. When you hold it up to the light, there should be no dark sections, instead, you should be able to see through the woolen fibers evenly.
