Description

For NAS and RAID environments, the manufacturer has designed these drives in such a way that they should last for many years even in continuous operation. These models spanned configurations from two bay to eight bay, including the DiskStation DS712+, DS1512+, and DS1815+. It is important to choose a drive purpose-built for RAID-optimized NAS systems to ensure optimum performance and preserve your valuable data. The biggest advantage of the Red SATA III drives is the fact that they have been specially developed for use in smaller NAS systems.

Red Plus” branding for non-SMR hard Western Digital adds “Red Plus” branding for non-SMR hard

I have recently installed this WD hard drive on my NAS and so far it's been working smoothly, especially in a Raid 1 array. WD Red hard drives are designed to perform under tough conditions encountered in high-intensity 24x7 multi-user NAS environments. The use of SMR technology in Western Digital Red is not going away—but moving forward, "Red" will exclusively mean SMR disks. The obvious question may be then, what’s wrong with the WD Greens and other low power drives that have been performing NAS duty to this point? In a mixed workload setting, the Western Digital Red slipped behind Caviar Green and others, coming in towards the bottom of the pack in most of these tests. In all areas the DiskStations filled with the Western Digital Reds offered strong linear gains as the amount of drives included in the RAID increased. There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. A 2-bay NAS is a great starting point but larger 4 and 5-bay systems are gaining ground as well due to the expanding girth of our digital collections. For the networking backend we used a Netgear ProSafe GSM7352S 48-Port 1GbE switch, with the compute side being one of our Lenovo ThinkServer RD240s interfacing with a four-port Intel i350-T4 NIC. The Red has all the features needed like no unnecessary head parking, drive tolerances that support RAID environments and3D Active Balance technology which reduces vibrational wear on the drives.

Stream, backup and share your digital content with a NAS powered by WD Red® drives in your personal or home office NAS environment. We stuck with the same tests as before, although for network testing with link-aggregation we increased the queue depth on large-block transfers to 4.The Western Digital Red 3TB drive uses a primarily single-sided PCB, with all components facing the body of the drive for thermal dissipation.

In broad strokes, we agree with the above quote from Western Digital's blog post announcing the new branding. The explosion of data seen today has spawned a spectrum of NAS uses cases, as well as increasingly demanding applications. We regret any misunderstanding and want to take a few minutes to discuss the drives and provide some additional information. WD offers a three year warranty, dedicated support line and QR code on the drive for mobile access to product documentation and support. On the support side the drives come with a three year warranty and a dedicated support line just for WD Red owners.
