Description

The book's structure takes us back and forth in time as Mackenzie watches current events play out at the funeral home but is also whisked back to revisit critical moments of her past when fateful decisions set her on a seemingly inevitable path to unhappiness and heartbreak. While trust between individuals is what ultimately holds society together, the law is meant to uphold truth and justice. Dawn Hosmer deconstructs a mystery in “Somewhere in Between” by presenting a main character who bounces between the present and past to solve her own murder. As readers journey with Magnolia and Rom through their experiences in the alternate reality, they are forced to confront how their own escapes shake the foundations of their lives. The story seems to be arcing towards an inevitable ending, but all the while, there are more hints at something more.

Hosmer juggles the story between past and present, each event drawing closer to Mackenzie’s untimely demise and the ultimate answer: What actually happened? Her dedication to her children is paramount, as is her estrangement from her husband, playing the bereaved spouse, though nothing about his crocodile tears sits well. You get a very realistic look at what it’s like being married to a narcissist while also battling depression and the isolation that usually goes along with that. She begins to doubt if she has the spiritual wherewithal to meet the standards of the devout dating pool of Blessed Sacrament Church.

Dawn does an amazing job at getting you to feel through this book… most of the feeling is loathing for some of the people in Mack’s life. I couldn’t put it down until I’d reached some kind of resolution—what in the world had happened to Mackenzie, and why? At first, I found the jumping back and forth structure a little jarring as a reader, but as the plot picked up steam and startling drama started to unfold at Mackenzie's funeral, I found myself eagerly turning the pages to get to the final twisty denouement.

He and his family are also in a state of in-between, suffering from the emotional aftermath of the accident. The ending is bittersweet, as there really can’t be a happy ending when the main character is dead right from the start, and we learn so much throughout the book that makes that fact sadder and sadder. They purchase a ranch in a very rural setting, away from town and away from people that would remind them of their daughter.Intriguing premise - Mackenzie Bartholomew discovers she's dead but has no idea how, so her spirit is forced back and forth in time to piece together the mystery. Glidewell has a really beautiful way of writing about faith that brings a lot of depth to the story, so I found myself able to enjoy the story despite my own experiences in Catholicism.
