I found this book didn’t really match up with the summary all that well - there is never any “mortal danger,” as alluded to. The series reaches closer to its ending when movie mogul Harry Nathan dies in a Beverly Hills swimming pool and Lorraine Page is once again forced into her toughest case as she tries to make up for the damage done to Cindy Nathan’s life (Harry’s third wife). In 2008, she was awarded aCBEin the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to Literature, Drama and Charity. Jane Tennison is leading a murder investigation into the recent brutal death of a young girl, her decomposed, starved body discovered in an old air raid shelter in the garden of the Lanark's now derelict house. Now, it is up to Page to prove that her instincts haven’t failed her, and that there is more to this case than meets the eye. It's impossible to understand what the guy sees in Jane, she's very unpleasant, doesn't like anyone, is perpetually annoyed with everyone around, from her parents to her colleagues. In 2020 she launched the acclaimed Listening to the Deadpodcastwith formerCSICass Sutherland, exploring forensic science and its impact on solving crimes. As such, the story drags in the places, and the lack of a particularly substantive and complex mystery ensures that it never really picks up to the degree you hope it would. Her biggest acting credit is for her work on “Rentaghost” (which is an English program for children), where she played a ghost (named Tamara Novek) that suffered from hay-fever.

You keep thinking that you’re about to reach the precipice where something exciting will happen, when you realize you’re just on a small hill where nothing has really happened at all. Would you like to follow your favourite authors and get an e-mail when they have a new book coming out? Jane's given little (well, no) kudos for her work but having also uncovered a baby's bones during the investigation she's is keen to pursue it, particularly when she discovers the newborn was smothered. Hopefully I’ve not left spoilers but if you read this book then I hope you get a lot more out of it than I did. Above Suspicion: This is the first novel in the “Anna Travis” series and was released in the year 2004.

In 2008, she was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to Literature, Drama and Charity. The family history was so all over the place and by the end of the book the whole thing seemed like a waste of time. I found the main DI pretty annoying and wasn't sure why she was discussing the police investigation with everyone she came into contact with, it seemed. Again LaPlante doesn't give readers a simple resolution but reminds us there are shades of grey lurking between the black and white, between the wrong and right.

Dark Rooms (Tennison, book 8) by Lynda La Plante

I don’t know why it wasn’t made clear, it would have made it more enjoyable to understand the context. Also, I must have missed some disclosure that the book is set in the 80’s, as I kept checking to see it had been published just this year, after things kept being mentioned which just didn’t fit with it being set in present time.I deserved something juicy and suspenseful but the little excitement it introduced quickly petered out and I was left unfulfilled. Overall, Dark Rooms was a weaker Tennison novel from Lynda La Plante, and one that does not really stand out when compared to some of the more impressive books in the series.
