Description

The second book ends with Volodya showing his scientist wife a Sears catalog. Nothing comes of that, and the book focuses on the fraternal twins of Volodya's sister (whose marriage no one was thrilled about). Follett is so good at plotting a story, even one that takes on such a complex topic as the World War II era. That’s what makes Winter of the World so hard to put down. You want to know what happens next.” Welsh author Ken Follett's historical novel Edge of Eternity (2014), the third and final book in his Century Trilogy, follows a generation of families as they grapple with the Cold War and other historic events of the second half of the twentieth century. The book's characters are scattered across the Western World, living in the United States, the United Kingdom, East Germany, and the Soviet Union. According to Publisher's Weekly, Edge of Eternity is "the mesmerizing final installment in an exhaustive but rewarding reading experience dense in thematic heft, yet flowing with spicy, expertly paced melodrama, character-rich exploits, familial histrionics, and international intrigue."

The WORST thing of Edge of Eternity is that, while typically good historic fiction helps you get in the skin of the people who really lived in a specific time, in this book the characters are there to make only high-school history come alive. They are not real people, they are puppets in the hands of a writer (and his many ghost writers) who seems to base his political opinions on a slim book of "World History". Yes, nearly 200 hours of Ken Follett books alone! This trilogy plus his middle ages books, Pillars Of The Earth and World Without End. There's a character in this book called John Lee, and I'd dearly love to confirm if he was named after Follett's prolific narrator.

Born on June 5th, 1949 in Cardiff, Wales, the son of a tax inspector, Ken was educated at state schools and went on to graduate from University College, London, with an Honours degree in Philosophy – later to be made a Fellow of the College in 1995. The one negative thing I'd say is that poor Lee got thrown a curveball with this book. If he'd known he'd have to impersonate John and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Richard Nixon, he might have turned it down. But by the third book, it was too late!

The man tells a story so well. . . . Follett can make things glow with some beautifully written episodes. . . . If you read Volume I, you’ll have to read Volume II. And once you read Volume II, you’ll be committed to reading Volume III. See you in a couple of years.”Even with these serious flaws, if the book was entertaining or moving that could redeem it, but sadly it is not. It is a story populated by caricatures who are stupid, promiscuous, drug addicted or delusional fools. I can honestly say that I have never felt as sad to have finished a story as I have when I cane to the end, not just of Edge of Eternity, but the end of the Century Trilogy. What an epic story. It is definitely in my top three trilogies if all time. Along with the Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King and the Empire Trilogy by Raymond Feist and Janny Wurts. Ken’s new book, The Evening and the Morning, will be published in September 2020. It is a prequel to The Pillars of the Earth and is set around the year 1,000, when Kingsbridge was an Anglo-Saxon settlement threatened by Viking invaders. Edge of Eternity is a historical and family saga novel by Welsh-born author Ken Follett, published in 2014. It is the third book in the Century Trilogy, after Fall of Giants and Winter of the World.

If you lean liberal and need to have your fantasy world upheld by books where liberals can do no wrong and conservatives can do noth These characters and many others find their lives inextricably entangled as they add their personal stories and insight to the most defining events of the 20th century. From the opulent offices of the most powerful world leaders to the shabby apartments of those trying to begin a new empire, from the elite clubs of the wealthy and highborn to the passionate protests of a country’s most marginalized citizens, this is truly a drama for the ages.Mr Follett weaves qn amazing, captivating fictional story into the historical bullet points of the 20th Century. Character become real and three dimensional. I have laugh, cried and cheered throughout these books. Follett is masterly in conveying so much drama and historical information so vividly . . . grippingly told.” The novel tells the story of the third generation of families developed in the first two novels and located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. The novel's characters become involved in a number of the most significant global events during the period, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the British Invasion, the Kennedy Administration, the Watergate scandal, and the Civil Rights Movement. This is the third and final - and worst - installation of the "Century Trilogy" by Ken Follett. I listened to the audiobook, read with too much pomp and too little warmth by the actor, who sounded like an anchorman from the '50s. I looked forward to this book with great anticipation. I enjoyed the story line and the characters but none hooked me and kept me caring about them as in the prior two books.
