At its most basic, an altar is a specially designated place where someone performs a religious ritual. And Wiccans and witches have no special claim to altars–they show up in religions across the world. Now let's jump into what we call Altar Supplies in the list below. Please note that this list is to help get you started but by no means are all these things required to make an altar: Give thanks to the spirits of each of the directions that you called and invite them to leave if they must or to stay if they wish. When it comes to creating a witch altar for yourself, there really are no rules! Altars are personal and should be an authentic reflection of who you are and where you wish to grow. Different types of witches will place importance on different objects and aesthetics.

The Importance of a Wiccan Altar

Some Witches like to change their altar cloth according to the type of ritual they are doing, or following the Wheel of the Year, having a different one for each season and each Pagan holiday. If you’re on a budget, simply use any piece of cloth that you have at home. Initiation: The rites that put a budding witch on the path to making things official, by joining a coven after studying its practice, traditionally for a year and a day. The initiations that follow eventually allow the initiate the opportunity to become a high priest or high priestess; those with enough knowledge, experience, and dedication can become the leader of a Wiccan coven. Simply put, an altar is a physical object or set of objects placed in a purposeful way, and in a purposeful place, that have spiritual significance to you, or that represent an element, archetype or energy whose influence you would like to have present in your spiritual practice. Altars are sacred spiritual spaces, however small or large. Traditionally, witches would worship the Goddess, say prayers, cast spells, meditate, and read tarot cards in these sacred spaces. But you don’t have to be a practicing witch to create a witch altar. Your sacred altar could simply be a visual representation of your dreams, beliefs, and intentions—the energy and life you’re calling in.

I have to admit that I am a bit of an altar addict. I have little shelves and plates all over the house that act as mini altars or shrines. I love to spend time adding to them, lighting incense and burning candles there while focusing on my intentions. I also have a main witch’s altar where I do my spell work, divination and journaling. However, you do not have to have an altar to be a witch. Many witches get along just fine without one – so the choice is yours. Optional: a small feather or bell to cleanse energy or represent the element of Air if not using an herb bundle for burning This post explains a bit about the many ways you can create a powerful magical witch’s altar that is perfect for you and your practice. If you are in a hurry – jump to the seven-step process below.

Creating a Wiccan Altar

Many witches have an altar or altars as a focus for their practice Altars can be a place to journal or meditate and/or to do spellwork and divination. A witch’s altar doesn’t need to be complicated – a simple shelf or windowsill with a few items that are sacred to you is all you need to create one. But this is also an area where you can let your witchy creativity go a little mad!
