There are some chilling passages and I was guessing and hoping for that wow ending. I easily predicted what was going though. The psychological torment they each feel as their future dreams are wiped out before they even started, is brilliantly drawn, never mind the guilt of causing three innocent deaths. The turmoil of each character as they try to concoct a plan is palpable and each of the friends has a different suggestion, fear and finger to point, which is so cleverly weaved together in an unsettling drama, that you can feel the despair. Megan offers a solution – she will take the fall for them ALL and claim that she alone was in the car that night. The price for this is that they all owe her a favour of whatever she asks. She video records their testimony and signed proof of their complicity should she ever need to use it. Felicity, in therapy, seems to be recovering flashes of some early memories, but are they accurate? Dr. Joe Grant appears to be warily developing more than professional feelings for her against his mother’s advice. He feels she needs much more psychotherapy but learns she has left Cambridge much earlier than planned. As is clear from the above, this is a novel that puts Flint right at the heart of the action, and one in which Flint’s own life becomes inextricably bound up with the lives of the criminals that she hunts – and those of her victims. This is a theme of the other Lacey Flint novels as well. So, let’s now turn to the next novel in the series, which is entitled ‘If Snow Hadn’t Fallen’.

The Split by Sharon Bolton - Criminal Element Book Review: The Split by Sharon Bolton - Criminal Element

Dr. Grant has troubles of his own. He has been blamed for getting too close to a couple of homeless female patients. He is recovering from a stab wound inflicted by homeless Ezzy, who is always seen on a skateboard. The young woman developed a crush, resented him for ignoring her romantic overtures, and stabbed him out of jealousy. Another young homeless woman was murdered, and an old street woman missing, both known to Joe. Dr. Joe’s mother is a policewoman who warns him about the danger of appearing too friendly with female patients. The main suspect, Sean, is a man who stares at homeless people while they sleep in the street. They fear him and find him creepy. The police cannot locate him.In the books, Flint is a relatively young police officer, however, because she is sharp witted and often fortuitously in the right place at the right time, she gets to deal with some very big cases. Though the Lacey Flint novels are not Bolton’s first works (her first book was, as mentioned above, ‘Sacrifice’), they form a coherent body of work which it is worth looking at more closely. So, let’s take a look at the first two novels in this series, i.e. ‘Now You See Me’ and ‘If Snow Hadn’t Fallen’. Three characters occupy the central space of The Split, and it is the slow revelation of their interconnected pasts that stirs up the reader’s burgeoning anxiety. As the novel opens, we are thrust into the mind of the already agitated Felicity, who searches the horizon for the last ships of the season approaching the Antarctic island of South Georgia. Her worst fears are realised when she spots Freddie, the man whose arrival she has been dreading, and is forced to execute a dangerous escape plan. The only problem is that Freddie has seen her, too. And he is determined to catch her.

Now we will see just what real friends are made of and how far some of them will go to protect their own hides. The premise of The Pact is brilliant. The night before they are to receive their A level test results, a close-knit group of 6 friends decides to play a dangerous game which ends with the death of a woman and her 2 young children. Rather than all of them going to jail, Megan takes the blame leaving the others off the hook, but in return they all owe her a favor once she is released from prison. Once she is released from prison 20 years later, that's when things really get interesting. The remote Antarctic island of South Georgia is about to send off its last boat of the summer--which signifies safety to resident glaciologist Felicity Lloyd. She took a job on this isolated island to hide from him, but now that he's out of prison, having served a term for murder, she knows he won’t give up until he finds her.

Then there’s this bloke called Freddie Lloyd, just released from prison for murder and is trying to hunt Felicity down. She is very aware of this, and he is persistent, and vicious. Homeless people play a significant part in this story, which is good to see – providing a window into how our homeless brothers and sisters live. The remote Antarctic island of South Georgia is about to send off its last boat of the summer – which signifies safety to resident glaciologist Felicity Lloyd.
