A design goal can be completed twice – once with patterns, once with colors – but you will receive only the higher point value on the tile. If you want a game with a high degree of interactivity, I will say now that Calico is not it. The most you do is draft from the same “market” of tiles, but in the five or so games I’ve played it’s never worth it to “hate draft” because you always have to place the tiles you take, and each tile is so impactful. You’ll only get to place 22 tiles through the game to maximise your score and reach your goals. The set-up is delightfully simple and the form factor is really compact. Possibly one of the most wholesome board games to have ever been created, Calico combines the art of quilt designing with adorable cats. The premise alone has the potential to put people off – a board game about quilting and cats, really? – but give it a chance, and Calico might surprise you. It’s surprisingly addictive, especially since there’s the chance to continue to earn new ranks the more games you play. Calico is a day-in-the-life community sim game where you are given an important and adorable task: rebuild the town’s cat café and fill it with cute and cuddly creatures! Build up your café by filling it with cute furniture, fun decorations, yummy pastries, and get it bustling with animals again! S0, start by giving each player a unique colour coded player board (quilt) and corresponding set of six design goal tiles. Pop the cat tokens and button tokens within easy reach. Play it just right and it is even possible to pull off killer-combo moves gaining cats, buttons, and goals in a single turn; enough point booty to make even the greatest Street Fighter fan weep into their bandaged hands! But if you like strategy games and you can appreciate high-quality illustrations, this is a brilliant choice. It’s something different, and since so many board games on the market today share similar stories and gameplay, that’s very refreshing.
