London, United Kingdom: Academic Press (Elsevier). pp.225–38. ISBN 978-0-323-66162-1. Vitamin B6 may play a role in improving brain function and preventing Alzheimer’s disease, but the research is conflicting. In addition, a review of 19 studies concluded that supplementing with B6, B12 and folate alone or in combination did not improve brain function or reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s ( 18). Less severe cases present with metabolic disease associated with insufficient activity of the coenzyme pyridoxal 5’ phosphate (PLP). [1] The most prominent of the lesions is due to impaired tryptophan– niacin conversion. This can be detected based on urinary excretion of xanthurenic acid after an oral tryptophan load. Vitamin B 6 deficiency can also result in impaired transsulfuration of methionine to cysteine. The PLP-dependent transaminases and glycogen phosphorylase provide the vitamin with its role in gluconeogenesis, so deprivation of vitamin B 6 results in impaired glucose tolerance. [1] [15] Diagnosis [ edit ] More research that includes randomized trials and not merely observational studies is needed to assess the exact role of vitamin B6 in cancer prevention.

1. What is Magne B6?

In the US, multi-vitamin/mineral products typically contain 2 to 4mg of vitamin B 6 per daily serving as pyridoxine hydrochloride, but a few contain more than 25mg. Many US dietary supplement companies also market a B 6-only dietary supplement with 100mg per daily serving. [1] While the US National Academy of Medicine sets an adult safety UL at 100mg/day, [1] [4] the European Food Safety Authority sets its UL at 25mg/day. [23] [24] Health claims [ edit ] Research on vitamin B6 and breast cancer also shows an association between adequate blood levels of B6 and a decreased risk of the disease, especially in postmenopausal women ( 37).

Bacteria residing in the large intestine are known to synthesize B-vitamins, including B 6, but the amounts are not sufficient to meet host requirements, in part because the vitamins are competitively taken up by non-synthesizing bacteria. Due to its role in hemoglobin production, vitamin B6 may be helpful in preventing and treating anemia caused by deficiency ( 19). The reason why B6 may help prevent cancer is unclear, but researchers suspect that it’s related to its ability to fight inflammation that may contribute to cancer and other chronic conditions ( 34, 35).

While these results are promising, they’re limited by small sample size and short duration. More research on the safety and effectiveness of vitamin B6 in improving PMS symptoms is needed before recommendations can be made ( 25). A three-month study in over 60 premenopausal women found that taking 50 mg of vitamin B6 daily improved PMS symptoms of depression, irritability and tiredness by 69% ( 23). Studies have linked high blood levels of circulating homocysteine with an increased risk of AMD ( 40, 41).

More research is needed to understand the effectiveness of vitamin B6 in treating anemia in populations other than those at increased risk for B vitamin deficiency, such as pregnant women and older adults Mastrangelo M, Cesario S (November 2019). The contradictory results of these studies may be due to the difference in vitamin B6 dose and study length.

The proper activity of these enzymes is crucial for the process of moving amine groups from one amino acid to another. To function as a transaminase coenzyme, PLP bound to a lysine of the enzyme then binds to a free amino acid via formation of a Schiff's base. The process then dissociates the amine group from the amino acid, releasing a keto acid, then transfers the amine group to a different keto acid to create a new amino acid.
