The guide was first published in 1950 by Ronald Hammerton Dove (1 June 1906– 19 March 2001) under the title A Bellringer's Guide to the Church Bells of Britain and Ringing Peals of the World. Previously the location of rings of bells was a matter only of local knowledge and hearsay. Dove produced eight editions of his guide between 1950 and 1994, managing to visit and ring at nearly all the ringable towers himself (a never-ending task as rings are continually added, removed or upgraded and, at least in the Guide's early years, rediscovered). full-circle ring), 16–1–2 (826 kg) in F♯. County books / DBR info discrepant; tower notice(s) / DBR info discrepant. Mon (1st).

U/R (full-circle ring), 4 cwt (~200 kg) in E♭. Unringable; ropes fall in a straight line; no slider(s). We list first the number of the bell within the ring following the normal conventions, working from the treble to the tenor. Accidentals (e.g. 2♯ or 6♭ bells in a ring of 12) are listed after the bells in the main ring. Data on additional bells in the building will be included where we know about them. all bells to be lifted and bearings cleaned/replaced as necessary. Clappers & crown staples of front five to be restored. New bell pad for 2nd bell The 8 bells have now been augmented to 10 with 2 trebles cast by John Taylor & Co, who have tuned the bells (apart from the old 6th) and hung them in the old frame with new framework for the old trebles above. A Doncaster head is an arrangement of four perpendicular canons, rather than the usual six. The canons are typically angular.estimate. This may be based upon known working periods in the case of the founder being of little doubt, and in other cases from estimates provided by researchers after comparing inscription lettering and/or wording with other known examples, etc. If the best estimate is a century (for example, based on its its shape or the profile of any moulding wires), then we show the final year of that century (e.g. c1399 for a 14th century bell). Where an authority has described a bell as mediæval with no more specific date, we enter this as c1499; similarly, pre-Reformation bells are entered as c1599. We show a founder's name even if it is only postulated that he is so and then indicated by a leading question mark. It is important to remember that we have to make a decision as to which is the most helpful founder name to show. Thus, where there is a degree of uncertainty (e.g. a bell coming from one particular foundry), it may be most helpful to show the name of the most likely founder rather than the generic title of the foundry, even though others might prefer to opt for the less specific ascription.

Fittings to be overhauled; bells to be augmented to eight and rehung in a new frame; electric chiming system to be installed full-circle ring), 10¾ cwt (~550 kg) in A. The ringing bells form part of a 14-bell chime. Thu (with exceptions). Augmented to eight with two new trebles; existing third bell retired and replacement cast; extend bell frame; provide all new fittings; supply electro-magnetic chiming system; install new ringing gallery; provide new access ladders throughout tower Estimated weights are expressed in hundredweight, and indicated by the suffic cwt. They may include a fractional part. After 1994, he handed over responsibility for the Guide to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers. The 11th edition (December 2018) is the most recent published as a book (now under the title Dove's Guide) and is also made available as a database for free access via the Internet: the Central Council continues to maintain the guide online. Dove's Guide for Church Bell Ringers (known to ringers as Dove's Guide or simply Dove) is the standard reference to the rings of bells hung for English-style full circle ringing. The vast majority of these "towers" are in England and Wales but the guide includes towers from the rest of the British Isles as well as a few from around the world (including the United States, Australia, Canada, Africa and New Zealand). The latest edition is Dove's Guide for Church Bell Ringers to the Rings of Bells of the World (11th Edition).
