Adam also loves DC and Marvel superheroes, thanks to TV shows like Batman: The Animated Seriesand Spider-Man: The Animated Series in the 1990s. In addition to animated superheroes, he is a big fan of Tim Burton’s Batman, Smallville, the Arrowverse, and the Marvel movies. Adam is also a huge comic book fan of all eras, from the golden and silver ages, to DC's New 52 and Marvel's Ultimate Universe. Also starring Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth) and Zoë Kravitz (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), The Batman sees Pattinson's Bruce face off against the likes of Colin Farrell (as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin) and Paul Dano (Edward Nashton/Riddler). Our core concept was, ‘What if Batman were real?'”Production Designer Nathan Crowley told Chicago Magazine. “That alone set it apart.” The first movie that he remembers being a passionate fan of was the first Toy Story movie. This led to a love of animated movies and television series. In addition to classic Disney animation and the Looney Tunes shorts, Adam is also a big fan of animation from the 1990s. This includes TV shows like Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Goof Troop. He is also a big fan of shows like The Simpsons and Futurama. Matt Reeves filmed The Batman (2022) in Glasgow, Liverpool and London, although plate shots of Chicago and New York were also used. “I wanted it to feel like an American city you’d never been to,” the director told CBR.

Of course the “riddling” aspect of The Riddler was retained in The Batman, giving Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne a dark mystery to solve. That mystery indeed unfolded in creepy fashion as The Riddler went around Gotham murdering the powerful in ways intended to send messages to Batman. Undoubtedly the creepiest of The Riddler’s kills saw him murdering commissioner Pete Savage by affixing a trap to his head that forced rats to burrow their way into the victim’s face and eat him alive. This particular killing method in fact seemed to have more in common with Saw villain Jigsaw than The Riddler’s primary inspiration, the Zodiac. As a huge Batman fan for as long as he can remember, Field’s younger self would sit drawing his own Burton-era Batman film posters while imagining ideas for new Batman stories. He can trace his obsession from the comics to the Animated Series through the Christopher Nolan movies and the Arkham video games. Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens." Like everything else about The Batman, Batman’s Batmobile reflects a certain realism and reclusivity. This Batman is not necessarily the flashiest or most polished, but he is still powerful. The Batman’s Batcave Warner Bros. We were playing with Gotham as having this prewar boom time, looking at a lot of architecture from movie palaces where we could play with ornaments and shapes in different ways. It created this idea that the city has fallen on hard times and had various booms and busts along the way, with a lot of unfinished skyscrapers and partially complete construction projects.Designer James Chinlund shares, “The design process was like finding a way of letting Bruce reveal his character and the intimidation factor of recognizing like ‘Oh, my God. That’s Batman!”—but at the same time keeping it under wraps low-key. Warner Bros. Warner Bros. Warner Bros. These early concept designs would seem to suggest that director Matt Reeves and Warner Bros.' art department were considering slightly more traditional/comic-accurate looks for Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) and The Penguin (Colin Farrell). Elsewhere, we get some awesome shots of Gotham, the new Batsuit, and even the Grapnel Gun that proves to be a vital part of the Caped Crusader's arsenal. We're anticipating seeing even more from the movie over the coming weeks, but for now, a full gallery of concept art can be found at the link above!

The most striking of the above alternate trap designs may be the one that features a whole set-up of tubes, allowing the rats to get some exercise after feasting on the victim’s face. Other designs are more simple and straight-forward, including one that’s literally just a square wire box strapped to the victim’s body with a couple rats crawling around inside. Another design employs a clear pane of glass so The Riddler can scrawl his catchphrase “No More Lies” on it.

Gotham was first mapped by illustrator Eliot R. Brown for the late-1990s “No Man’s Land” story arc, in which the city is cut off from the rest of the United States.
