Description

R.Tolkien (1892-1973) was a distinguished academic, though he is best known for writing The Hobbit , The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion , plus other stories and essays. This opulent new version has an extensive index, red font for chapter titles, those folded maps, and of course all of Tolkien’s illustrations. The front shows a very busy image of the battle which includes a lot of the Rohirrim, but I can’t pick out any of our main characters. I got the set delivered and it was filled with packing paper to protect the box, but to be honest, I feel like I wouldn’t worry about much damage unless it was a sharp object.

To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details. An increasing interest in the roots of culture, together with a recognition of the importance of myth and archetype in understanding the human condition, led to a reflorescence of myth-based literature in the 20th century. Tolkien believed that the roots of myth and the roots of language are one and indivisible, and he demonstrated this belief by creating an entirely new language (Elvish) with its own grammar, its own beautiful script and its own mythology. There's a tonne of extras including some maps of Middle Earth and Mordor, a fantastic "Kings Letter" from the rejected epilogue for the book and some pages from the Book of Mazarbul.

It shows Bilbo before he went away on his adventure, and whilst there’s so many other pieces of artwork in the book – I’m so happy they picked this one for the front. The Folio Society has only released 1,000 numbered copies of this new limited-edition The Lord of the Rings book set. Lee's classic illustrations were first published in Harper Collins' 'New' [single-volume] edition of 1991.Then the back is actually all about the end of the book and shows the boat that sails away with people who helped fight in the battle. Before each of the individual books, there is a full color reproduction of Tolkien’s own cover design, and Wayne G. Inside, the book includes thirty-two of Tolkien’s illustrations and maps, along with the pages of the Book of Mazarbul (from the Dwarves’ ill-fated attempt to retake Moria), whose pages Tolkien had created to include in the initial editions, but were nixed by the publisher due to the high cost of the recreation in publication. Set in the richly crafted world of Middle-earth, it weaves a tale of heroism, friendship, and the battle between good and evil. Tolkien had seen her sketches and was so impressed that his executors gave special permission for Fraser to interpret them for these Folio editions.

I just think that The Shire and those rounded Hobbit doors are so synonymous with these books despite us not being in The Shire that long. This great modern classic is accompanied by a wealth of beautiful watercolour paintings and delicate pencil drawings from Alan Lee. Also appearing are two removable fold-out maps drawn by Christopher Tolkien revealing all the detail of Middle-earth. Produced in 1991 to promote the reissue of Tolkien under Harper Collins during the 'Tolkien Centenary' in 1992.

Featuring ink-sprayed edges and two maps of Middle-earth, this special edition is illustrated throughout in colour by Tolkien himself. It's housed in a lovely red hard back sleeve, with one of Tolkien's own designs on the front and a cardboard box covered in the original Middle Earth map.R. Tolkien, the reclusive, pipe-smoking Oxford don, was in the vanguard, and so great was his achievement that his name became virtually synonymous with the literature of fantasy.
