Description

The fourth column is the list of London area routes, but in some cases the garages operate other bus routes, or other kinds of work such as coaching, which are not listed. The fifth column is the garage PVR, or the maximum number of buses on the road on these routes at any one time. Of course, all garages have spare vehicles allocated in addition, and in some cases driver trainers etc.

If you wondered why London’s bus drivers take part in the annual Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph, then this book has the answer. During World War One, buses and their drivers joined the war effort carrying rations in their vehicles to the front (including the hay and oats for the horses). During World War Two the drivers delivered coffee and doughnuts to the American Troops. BT (London Sovereign, Edgware) originally came from Borehamwood Town, depot of the erstwhile BTS, which was subsequently bought out by Sovereign and re-located to Edgware. Complaints, commendations, comments and suggestions relating to these should therefore be directed to TfL.

Palmers Green bus garage to expand its footprint - Palmers

The owners of Palmers Green bus garage, Arriva London ("a DB Company" - ie owned by the German state railways), have applied for planning permission to demolish two buildings next to the garage (to its east) and use the land as an open-air bus park. However, there are no plans to expand the number of buses which are housed at the garage - the maximum number will remain at 69. This number of buses is in fact rather too many for the size of the building, meaning that manoeuvring of buses within the garage is difficult and potentially unsafe, and the new parking capacity will alleviate this problem. Since the start of tendering in 1985, some codes have also reflected the name of the owning company, examples being AH ( Armc hair, Brentford), EL ( Eastern Nationa l, Chelmsford), WI ( Wings, Uxbridge), BE ( Blue Triangl e, Rainham). Such company names may not still be in use today: DX ( Arriva London North East, Barking) originates from Di x Travel, which was absorbed into Grey-Green, becoming its Dagenham operation, and subsequently relocated to Barking, and now absorbed by Arriva London. Similarly BT (Sovereign, Edgware) comes from BTS, which was subsequently bought out by Sovereign, and Hounslow Heath code WK originates from Westlin k. The official code FR for Metrobus's Crayford base is especially obscure, referring to the original owner, one Chris Freeman of Freeman's Coaches, which was absorbed into Crystals, which subsequently sold out to Tellings-Golden Miller in 2003, who then sold it on to Metrobus in 2005.
