Description

Her heroine, Alice Kelly, is completely unique - beguiling, complicated, extraordinary - and she’ll change the way you see the world. Alice, feeling everything everywhere very deeply made me relate to her in ways I wouldn’t think of in the first place.

An interesting fictional recount of how someone with synesthesia may see life and the world around them. It’s been quite a while since a book brought me to tears, let alone left me with an ache in my heart and tears of joy tracing my cheeks. I’ve read the majority of Cecelia Ahern’s books; she has a way of making the impossible seem like reality, she blends the two together beautifully, I always find myself completely absorbed when reading her work. It won’t put me off reading Cecelia Ahern’s books as I have loved so many of them and I will hope that the next one is a winner for me.Ahern's books tend to have some small fantasy element to it, but the premise of this one completely fascinates me. I love how we get a whole story of her life until she gets old, one is able to see how she gets stronger, how she develops with experiences and how her relationships progress. She is already living with her two brothers and mother, who is deep in her own mental health issues, and as time goes by, she finds herself caring for her wheelchair-bound mother, living a life she is coping with but suffocating herself as well. Thank goodness for the people who brought light and understanding into her life: her brother Hugh, schoolfriend Gospel, neighbour Naomi and another who I won’t mention for fear of giving away spoilers. For a novel centring on colours, I’m afraid this was terribly bland, or hummus as Ahern might describe it.

Once I’d gotten my head around what was going on and I understood it more I wanted to know how Alice coped, how she got through things and finding friendships and actual romantic relationships!I never read blurbs, if the title catches me, cover catches me or it’s one of my favourite authors I’ll read it. Alice has to come to terms with her gift, she can read a person, so this comes in handy as it keeps her and others safe, she’s also blessed with a green thumb and it opens lots of unexpected opportunities for her.

The book discusses everything from self-discovery to complicated family relationships, neglectful parents, and a love story.

In this case, Alice’s relationships with others considering her unusual ability forms the crux of story is all about and is well written. I know the adage it is not the destination but the journey that matters, but Alice's journey is more of the same. I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I wept quite a lot on and off all the way through and it observes human nature very well.
