If possible, use a visualizer or projector to enlarge the illustration, and cover the text so that children are focusing on the picture. Ask them to talk about it. This is a three-week Writing Root based around the book Weslandia by Paul Fleischman. It begins with children creating a shelter for their own civilisation, as a hook to create engagement with the text. The first part then continues with children making predictions, describing Wesley’s character and eventually retelling the story in their own words. In the second part, children begin by creating a non-chronological report, published as a brochure for Weslandia itself, using planning models and information from and inferred from the text. In the final part, children create their own civilisation, based on Weslandia. Grammar and spelling objectives are embedded throughout. Synopsis of Text: Thanks so much for your lovely message and for everything that you do with Book Wagon. Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do.

Secondary Year 6 leavers - Covid-safe transition activities and ideas It's been a chaotic year but Year 6 children still deserve the best ending to their primary journeyI love that this is a recommendation from my niece and nephew. I thought it was a wonderfully clever story with lots of big imagination. I love the artwork and all the things Wes can do with these plants and fruits. Enter the witty, intriguing world of Weslandia! Now that school is over, Wesley needs a summer project. He’s learned that each civilisation needs a staple food crop, so he decides to sow a garden and start his own - civilization, that is. He turns over a plot of earth, and plants begin to grow. They soon tower above him and bear a curious-looking fruit. As Wesley experiments, he finds that the plant will provide food, clothing, shelter, and even recreation. It isn’t long before his neighbors and classmates develop more than an idle curiosity about Wesley - and exactly how he is spending his summer vacation. Text Rationale: Weslandia is a story about an odd ball named Wesley. He is quirky, inventive, and does not readily follow the main stream of people and things around him. He enjoys learning and despite the pressure of others around him, he is true to himself. Find out about the different parts of a plant and research plant diversity across the world. Using what you’ve learned, design some new plants and label their key features like a botanist. Collect these new plants in a class book: an imaginary field guide to unknown species.

Weslandia by Paul Fleischman is an enchanting tale of a boy who didn't fit in with those around him in his community or even at school. He was bullied and misunderstood by his parents and other adults for his "unnormal" behavior. When given the opportunity to create a summer project Wesley took his opportunities to its fullest. He used his knowledge from school to create a land of his own creation; a place where he could fit in. His land grew and grew to the point where Wesley could create everything a stable society needs. He enjoyed his land and was the happiest he had been in a very long time; he even earned the envy of his peers as well as some friends along the way. The stages are based on a measure of readability called an ATOS score. It is a formula designed to guide students and teachers to appropriate-level texts. It is based on a number of predictors - average sentence length, average word length and word difficulty level. What Wesley likes is books, and he doesn’t want to pretend to be something he’s not – even when he gets bullied for being different.
