You shouldn't put mounting hardware spacers directly behind the stove because they would conduct heat to the combustible walls. It would be best to check your wood stove’s manual to find the manufacturer’s instructions for building a hearth for that particular model. If you have a combustible surface like plywood subfloor under the stove with the standard legs, you’ll need a minimum 1/2″ thick non-combustible material covering the floor, extending 12″ in front of the stove, and matching the clearances to the sides and back.

Ventilated metal heat shield thickness specified in NFPA-211 is 24 gauge for both appliance and connector clearance reduction. But, they have been known to get much hotter – particularly if the stove’s fire is burning fiercely. The primary instance in which you’ll need to use a heat shield, is if you’re installing a stove in a confined space. An electrical outlet would be a combustible material, so you wouldn’t be able to leave a cut-out for it if a heat shield was needed in that area.If you’re looking to install a wood burning stove in your home, then you may have heard that you also need to install a heat shield. Please also note that the ventilated metal shield thickness specified in NFPA-211 is 24 gauge or thicker. Check out Nick's 5er installation video for an example of using shields attached directly to the stove and to the pipe to reduce clearances with minimal visual impact. Even with protection for the wall, you still need to respect regulations and make sure you leave plenty of clearance between the wall and the stove. Photos on the episode show the stove way too close to the wall, but if you look closely, you'll see that the stove was not hooked up yet.

The first is that there must be at least 25mm between the heat shield and the wall, and there has to be space at the top and bottom of the shield to allow air flow.

Wood stove heat shields, by utilizing air space around them, reduce the amount of space that you need in between your wood stove and the combustible materials (like walls! However, since bubble wrap is flexible and could intrude on the air space behind the shield over time, I’d suggest using a rigid wall material behind the shield to enforce that air space.

A stone shield would fall under the Masonry Heat Shield guidelines and would need to be 3-1/2″ thick to reduce wall clearances by up to 1/3. The easiest way to illustrate how big a heat shield needs to be is to cut a dowel to whatever the standard rated clearance is, and use that to measure. These curious critters were awoken in the Nevada desert after intense flooding upended Burning Man 2023. The Hobbit is perfect - not only does it fit very snugly, but it looks fantastic and the blue door complements the tiles very nicely. We had two different London-based fireplace companies tell us that we simply had to knock out the old cast iron and tile fireplace to fit in a woodburning stove, and that there was no other option! There is no tested standard I’m aware of for combining various forms of heat shields, so while you’d think using them together would give you even more than a 2/3 reduction, I can’t say how close you could go in that configuration. An A1 fire-rated material will absolutely not catch fire under any circumstances, and won’t fall apart if placed directly into a fire.

They work by reflecting the majority of the heat away from the house, preventing it from seeping through cracks and burning your floor, walls, and furniture. Gauge steel has a melting point of around 2500 degrees, though, so for wood stove applications it's fireproof enough. The Vlaze Crackle Glaze heat shield will certainly stand out and help make your stove the focal point of your living room. e. they won’t burn or contribute to a fire), so there shouldn’t be a problem with using them as part of a properly assembled wall-attached air-cooled heat shield assembly.
