With a whopping 15 built-in effects, the MV800 has the most in-depth effects mode we've ever seen on a camera. Our scoring rubric doesn't even allow us to award as many points as we think this camera deserves for these fun extras. The Samsung MV800 employs a CCD sensor that offers 16.1-megapixels of effective resolution. While Samsung doesn’t list the physical size of the sensor, it’s pretty much a nailed-on certainty that it’ll be of the 1/2.3inch variety. In addition to the full 16MP, you can also choose to shoot at 14MP, 10MP, 5MP and 3MP in the native 4:3 aspect, with 12MP and 2MP available at 16:9. The MV800 includes a selection of 'Smart Filter' digital effects among its app-style iconography, including the familiar pinhole camera-like vignetting feature and perspective warping fisheye. A Smart Album feature can also organize pictures by faces as well as by date. The Samsung MV800 Multiview is the latest addition to the company’s self-portrait oriented compact camera range, along with the existing 2View models. The idea of these products is to provide you with a screen that faces the same way as the lens, making it easy to take pictures of yourself and your friends. The 2View range did this in a slightly clunky way by having a second screen on the front of the camera whereas the MV800 does things a little different, employing a single screen that normally faces rearwards but can flip all the way up until it can face the front.

Saturation is actually adjustable, which could even out the intensity, and there are some additional shooting modes especially for portraits. But those both require tweaking, and we only count results from default color modes, so they don't factor into our rating here. In any case, neither of those options will actually improve the inaccurate shades. All of the sample images in this Review were taken using the 16 megapixel SuperFine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 5.5Mb. Some of the oddball remainders are genuinely cool. The Night Shot setting actually opens up mode-specific aperture and shutter controls for shooting in dark conditions. Beauty Shot can smooth over blemishes—a little or a lot, whichever the user wants to choose, thanks to adjustable parameters. It’s a simple variation on the established flip and twist screens, generally found on larger, SLR-style, cameras, but is cheaper to produce and more compact. Unfortunately it’s also more cumbersome.Regular shooting modes are limited to Smart Auto, six Scene modes and a Program mode that offers a bit of control over some basic shooting parameters. Staying briefly with the other ‘sensible’ shooting modes, there’s a Touch Shot that enables you to select a point of focus and take a picture simply by touching the screen, a Self Shot mode for self-portraits, a Night Shot that allows you to control the shutter speed and aperture for long exposures (over one second), a Dual IS mode for sharper results at slower shutter speeds, a Close Up macro mode and a 3D picture mode (3D viewing device sold separately). When you view the images at full size you can see that they are sharp with good detail in the centre but they become quite blurred in the corners. Typically with Samsung compacts, colour reproduction is excellent. It's no surprise that it finishes behind both 1080p shooters in our comparison group, the ELPH 500 HS and category-leading Tryx, though it is sharper than the PL120. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft and ideally benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop.
