I like the idea of this book, and I loved the stories in the third section which focused on brand new fairy tales not based on prior stories. This one really didn't work for me at all, also left a peppermint trail instead of stones or breadcrumbs. The couple intentionally casts Black children of different ages, skin tones and hair textures in traditionally white roles, like Cinderella.

World renowned child photographers, Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are a husband and wife duo and the imaginative forces behind CreativeSoul Photography. Revisit beloved classics, but with a twist, such as The Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty, Hansel and Gretel, Red Riding Hood, The Poisoned Apple, and find new favorites with stories created especially for the Anansi and the Three Trials, Aku the Sun Maker, How the Zebra Got Its Stripes, The Legend of Princess Yennenga, and John Henry, the Steel-Drivin' Man. After the grace of Allah, it was our parents and their sheer dedication and discipline that saw us to the end.You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The two began doing personal projects where Black children were encouraged to wear their natural hair in fashionable settings. The book is broken down into three categories: Classic fairy tales, African and African American Folktales and original stories. Beautifully illustrated, it is an inspiring story to share with friends, colleagues, and neighbours of any faith or none. Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are the talented husband and wife team behind CreativeSoul Photography, a company on a mission to empower kids of color through stunning photography that showcases their beauty, uniqueness, and creativity.

In the fall of 2000, the company's debt was purchased by Wells Fargo, which hounded the reemerging brand with collection fees until it eventually broke. That means that many of the stories are reimagined to take place within a black community with black characters at the center of the story and I kind of loved it. Another fabulous coffee-table-style photography book of fabulously styled black children by the Bethencourts. After being hired to replace Jeanne Herrick as Vice President of Merchandising, Steve Stevens (Circuit City) replaced Glenn E. This is the Goldilocks of CROWNED: Magical Folk and Fairy Tales from the Diaspora by husband and wife photographers Kahran and Regis Bethencourt.Somewhere inside, Nani will be fussing about, putting on the kettle, laying out the plates and finding my favourite biscuits – chocolate wafers. There seemed to be a conscious effort to give the protagonists happy endings, which I understand the value in doing. Vhalla makes several good points about this, how they’re letting Victor get stronger, but time did pass a fair bit. It was fun seeing Vhalla grow into the role of Empress – and her fights against the foolish conventions were entertaining.

CROWNED is a visual representation of the CreativeSoul original mission: celebrate and embrace natural Black beauty. The couple recently authored their New York Times best selling coffee table book, "Glory" which brings to life past, present, and future visions of black culture. Filled with stunning photography, these magical tales of the diaspora bring to life past, present, and future visions of Black culture to create a society where all kids are created equal and feel empowered to move in the world as their true authentic self. Regis and Kahran Bethencourt are a husband-and-wife duo and the imaginative forces behind CreativeSoul Photography.

The stories themselves are re-tellings of standard Disney tales, retellings of African fairy tales and new fairy tales that encompass the lives of children today. In the retelling of Cinderella, "Asha the Little Cinder Girl," Asha wears an extravagant blue gown with purple tulle shooting from the bottom as Jamal, her Prince Charming, slides on a white high-top sneaker instead of a glass slipper. I love the big battles, and they look epic in movies (hello, Lord of the Rings), but the other side was a faceless army.
