She is ‘annoyed’ with God. I rage at my God when life’s challenges become too much to bear. To be ‘annoyed’ sounds like a missing child is a small blip in an otherwise perfect life that God has dared to dump on them. (Anger at God appears at the end of the book.) Being told over and over again what to believe – an abduction – served only to reinforce suspicion in this reader. How would they know what had happened? The child could have wandered off. (Ten years on, this may now be the latest theory.) Didn’t they call the media, the government, family and friends before calling the police? And wasn’t it someone at the Ocean Club who actually did call the police? And didn’t they allow streams of people into 5a prior to the police turning up, meaning the crime scene was already contaminated due to their actions and choices? This probably confirms the McCanns in their despair. It takes an unimaginable kind of evil to harm a child, but proof that such evil exists can be found in the comments below every positive review of this book. The abductor, wherever he is, is certainly most grateful to all these ghouls for their unstinting comfort and support. After all, they are doing everything they can to make sure he gets away with it.

On 22 July the Sunday Express ran the headline: ‘MADDY’S PARENTS TO FACE INQUIRY’. It was “incredibly hurtful…” Kate saying she felt "fleetingly disappointed" that she had not been invited to the beach with her friends, but Fiona Payne saying in her rogatory interview that the McCanns HAD been invited, but had tennis lessons.

It has been more than 16 years of agony for heartbroken parents Kate and Gerry McCann. Their beloved daughter Madeleine vanished from their holiday apartment in Pria Da Luz on May 3, 2007, and has been missing ever since. If you knew the evidence we had you would come to the same conclusion as I do but I can’t give you details because we don’t want the accused to know what we have on him – these are tactical considerations,” he told the BBC.

While Dawn goes about running her Bed and Breakfast and trying to avoid emotional entanglements, Ryan Benning, a widower, and his two young sons move into town. The widower turns out to be the new town doctor and he desperately needs Dawn's help. If they were indeed responsible for Madeleine's accidental death and subsequent cover-up, how did they manage to keep that from the hordes of family and friends who turned up in Portugal to support them? And over five months? The couple went to the European court of human rights (ECHR) to seek redress, relying on the European convention on human rights – including articles conferring the right to a fair hearing (article 6) and the right to respect for private and family life (article 8) – to argue that Amaral’s statements damaged their reputation, their good name and their right to be presumed innocent.

Then onto the main sections. These people cannot be right in the head. They can't be. In regards to a comment Madeleine had said the night before when she or the twins (I forget which) woke and cried for over an hour; And as for Kate and Gerry, any one who thinks they had anything to do with it and then courted the publicity they way they have is a fool. There is no way they would draw such attention to themselves and continue to do so. Later that day the McCanns met a ‘crowd of children’ who were waving placards with Madeleine on them; this had been organised by the government. The McCanns met with some Muslim leaders and asked them to pray for Madeleine which they agreed to do. Telling a slight white lie, they said they ‘lived in Leicester’, where there are a lot of Muslims. (There aren’t many Muslims in Rothley). Their many political and celebrity benefactors and friends – including Clement Freud – get mentions, as if they conferred a seal of approval. The truth has died with him': Uncle of 'Ireland's Madeleine McCann' Mary Boyle, 6, has died - and he was the last person to see her alive before she vanished in 1977
