Summary and reviews of The Blue by Lucy Clarke - BookBrowse

In the Philippines they are invited to join the crew of The Blue, a beautiful yacht sailing lazily through the Pacific islands. Lana and Kitty have been inseparable friends since childhood, sharing many common experiences, including living on the same street in motherless households. The lead is Katie, a woman whose world is shattered when Mia her younger headstrong sister is found dead in Bali. Life doesn't get any better than this but all the time you can feel the hint of something sinister lurking in the background.

The Blue by Lucy Clarke | Goodreads

That is where I found my issue with it as, after reading the book flap, I assumed there were going to be secrets, lies, and twists galore. It is an excellent work of premium chick-lit fiction that features two sisters one adventurous and the other wild. A dangerous swell of mistrust and lies threatens to bring the crew's adventures to an end - but some won't let paradise go. They have known each other since the first year of high school, where Lana was the archetypal artistic misfit and Kitty her social lifeboat - the two of them bonded over the loss of their mothers at a young age. Well, how else does the collective - chock-full of entirely self-interested escape artists - navigate the after effects of a crime while aboard a vessel in the middle of the ocean with, quite literally, no escape?

Clarke vividly depicts the ocean voyage in this immersive tale—both the beauty of an idyllic escape and its descent into something more sinister.Still, I'm sure it will make a good TV mini-series for Paramount+: beautiful locations, beautiful people, a little sex, a little violence, secrets and lies. In the Philippines they are invited to join the crew of The Blue, a beautiful yacht sailing on a voyage beginning in the Philippines ending in New Zealand, expected to take as long as 8 months. The crew is made up of a group of young travellers bitten by wanderlust, and it doesn’t take long for Lana and Kitty’s dream of sea-bound romance to turn into reality. In fact, much like a true crime documentary (only with more sex, partying, and teenage drinking) No Escape reels the viewer in, frame by frame. I certainly drew on the deep sense of connection we share when writing Lana and Kitty’s friendship—although our friendship is far less complicated and volatile, thankfully!

The Blue’ for fourth UK original Paramount+ sails into ‘The Blue’ for fourth UK original

The book then jumps back a few months to our main character Lana and her best friend Kitty, leaving the UK and heading to the Philippines. If I had to compare it, off-the-top of my head I would say it's 'somewhat' similar to The Woman In Cabin 10 but I think The Blue- characters, plot, everything is a thousand times better. The dual timelines were really effective at drawing me into the mysteries and let me become quite attached to some of the crew. Ich mag es, wenn eine Gruppe von unterschiedlichen Charakteren mit ihren ganz eigenen Geheimnissen auf engem Raum miteinander konfrontiert werden. Emergency responders are inching through a ransacked yacht room by room; on the wall of one of the cabins, written in a barely legible, bloody scrawl, is simply: “I confess”.It made me question my own life and left me in that place of not having an answer to some of the questions at the heart of the story. This is Clarke at her finest: thrilling plot, perfectly rendered scenery, and characters as real as your best friend—or your worst enemy. Except at night it was even worse, because by then you were too tired to think rationally and everything became magnified, distorted. Clarke handles the joys, challenges, and chores of sailing with easy confidence and does just as fine a job with her misfit crew and their easily upset equilibrium. Both “Blue” and “Breath” clearly illustrate the author’s obvious love for the water and all things oceanic.
