It was a loved-up Morrissey who decamped to Rome for the recording of Ringleader Of The Tormentors. With producer Tony Visconti drafted in to work his magic on a dozen compositions, the album also features a cameo from Italian maestro Ennio Morricone, whose string arrangements adorn Dear God Please Help Me. Plagenhoef, Scott (15 October 2010). "Morrissey: Bona Drag[20th Anniversary Edition]". Pitchfork . Retrieved 15 October 2010.

Elsewhere, the staunch animal rights activist slams David Bowie for feeding: “on the blood of living mammals.” But still, you’ve got to love the curmudgeonly eccentric who, whether his detractors care to admit it or not, has been a fascinating figure in British pop culture. The Must-Have Albums Kill Uncle was recorded during a transitional phase for Morrissey, having parted ways with record producer Stephen Street but not yet working with his future long-term team of guitarists Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer. The album was produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley with most of the music written by Fairground Attraction's Mark E. Nevin. Felder, Rachel (22 August 1991). "Morrissey: Kill Uncle". Rolling Stone. Archived from the original on 26 October 2009 . Retrieved 10 February 2015.Morrissey decided to scrap the idea of a full-length LP and release a compilation of singles and B-sides instead. Thus, the Bona Drag project was born. " November Spawned a Monster" was released in May 1990 to modest success; the album and the single " Piccadilly Palare" followed, both released on the same day that October. Morrissey explained, "People will view it suspiciously in England but not in the rest of the world where all those funny little singles were never released. It was initially for the rest of the world, but EMI were determined to release it here." [11] Composition [ edit ] The original album closes with "There Is a Place in Hell for Me and My Friends", a simple piano piece that reflects the existential longing of the album and showcases Morrissey's torch song influence. [3] This version was replaced in the 2013 expanded edition by the recording from the At KROQ live EP. This reissue of Bona Drag, a highpoint of his early solo career, comes as something of a victory lap, a thumb in the eye to those who doubted him around the time of the album’s original recording. Born out of the dissolution of his relationship with longtime collaborator and Smiths producer Stephen Street, as well as Moz’s struggles to produce enough solid material for the follow-up to 1988’s Viva Hate, Bona Drag saw him shaking off all of these pressures and further cementing his status as a one of the premier talents of his—and, all right, any—generation.

Whatever the reasons for the Smiths’ demise in 1987, eyebrows were arched at the prospects for an enduring Morrissey solo career without the musical nous of Johnny Marr. Yet, 34 years on years on from the release of Viva Hate, Moz continues to confound the critics – occasionally appearing to go out of his way to piss them off – by metaphorically waving his gladioli for perennial outsiders everywhere.Press Release: The Last of the Famous International Playboys: Special Edition Single; Kill Uncle: Album Remastered | True to You". And yes, that’s an Italian children’s choir augmenting The Father Who Must Be Killed, The Youngest Was The Most Loved and At Last I Am Born with beautiful innocence, on an album high on ambition but strangely low on customary lyrical genius. Please Help the Cause Against Loneliness" (demo) (Outtake from Viva Hate, previously covered by Sandie Shaw)

In our complete guide to the solo career of Morrissey we look at one of the true godfathers of Britpop… Written by David Burke. At No.3 in the UK, it was his highest-charting single ever along with Irish Blood, English Heart. JONNY BRIDGWOOD, bassist: There was a general air of excitement from day one. The feeling was that we were about to create something that was quite special. Everyone was keen and enthusiastic. Bona Drag features all of Morrissey's solo singles up to that point, two of which ("Suedehead" and "Everyday Is Like Sunday") were taken from his first solo album Viva Hate, while the others were making their first ever appearance on an album. Four of these singles were Top Ten hits. The album also includes several B-sides, none of which had appeared on an album before. LANGER: We weren’t interested in musical fashions at the time, like the whole Manchester thing. That’s why Kill Uncle got slated, because it didn’t fit in and didn’t sound like The Smiths. But I thought that was its strength. Each song had a different story and feel. I wanted to pull out the colour in each song, without making it sound too over the top. Kill Uncle (CD booklet). Morrissey. HMV. 1991. {{ cite AV media notes}}: CS1 maint: others in cite AV media (notes) ( link) Included here are two key songs from _Viva Hate_, namely "Suedehead" and the wonderfully evocative "Everyday is Like Sunday," which just _sounds_ like a dreary English seaside town, but elsewhere the songs are mostly singles and new songs. The album begins incredibly strongly with a string of top-notch songs, including the elegant and slightly melancholy "Piccadilly Palare," the chiming jangle of "Interesting Drug," which features Kirsty MacColl on wonderfully effective vocal harmonies, the menacing and sad "November Spawned a Monster," an electrifying highlight that remains a staple of Morrissey's live set, and the beautifully sad "Will Never Marry."
