Enola is such a breath of fresh air, who, despite her sheltered life, is ferociously intelligent and clever. I loved how she used “The Language of Flowers” and her clothing to communicate, conceal and manage so many challenges she encountered in this book. Someone tried to help protagonist with her life and future, she just ran away (to a place she knows nothing about, based on a childhood fantasy) and when she realized her fantasy is just a fantasy, she has no sense to mend her ways. Determined to find the missing porter, Enola travels to the rough part of London where the boys live and starts searching Aldgate Pump area for the missing boy. When she finds the missing buttons - but not the boy - she decides that drastic action is essential if she's to save the missing boy. Moreover, I really don’t like the way the author brought up the theme of woman suffrage. The theme is exciting enough. However, I think the author is missing the point. Woman suffrage is about democracy and liberalism. The author seems to confuse this with anarchy. Woman suffrage is about equality and fairness, not lawlessness.

Antagonist: The antagonist in the case regarding the marquess is very predictable and has so minute role. The whole book just revolves around protagonist being high and mighty. While Enola can be a bit unlikeable at times, overall she is a magnificent, resonant character, easily as fascinating as her older brother, or brothers, to be precise, even if Mycroft doesn't appear all that often in Conan-Doyle's canonical tales.It's also impossible not to admire the detail and significant differences that a female point of view in Victorian England that Springer has decorated the tale with. Having just turned 14 years old, Enola discovers that her mother has disappeared leaving no clue as to her whereabouts. She is torn between loving devotion and worry for her mother's welfare and a deep sense of anger and disappointment at the possibility that her mother has simply left and abandoned her to her own devices. However, the real antagonist in this book, in my opinion, is actually a woman by the name of Lady Eudoria Vernet Holmes. Mrs. Holmes is one of the few characters I actually hate, and having not meet her in this book, I would rather not meet her at all. Ever. I honestly loved the movie a lot the first time I watched it I wanted to see if the books were similar. While this novel may be directed towards a young adult market, it is so multilayered that adults will enjoy it as much as the teenaged reader. As I said at the beginning, Nancy Springer has a magnificent achievement in this book. She is an ornament to the writing profession. Despite being written in this century, the writing has an old-style feeling, and draws heavily on period language. This was a great discussion point for out book club.
