It may look an aesthetic atrocity, but beyond the gross exterior, the Joyo Ultimate Drive is a clear descendant; in fact, an OCD version 1.4 clone with slight component tweaks. For a more interesting function of the switch, I soldered a 4.7nF// R13 = 33k capacitor that affects the switch in the "LOW" position. Significantly boosts the frequency band from 1 kHz up (completely adds more of all mids). Paul Cochrane Timmy » Grail-Status Transparent Mid-Gain Overdrive That Boosts More of What You Already Have We run them through different combinations of guitars and amplifiers, since changing the signal chain can greatly affect the sound of an overdrive pedal.

The way that has been suggested as a fix (reversing the diode) gives you diode in series with a body diode, so about 1.2v, in parallel with the other transistor's mosfet function, making it irrelevant. It gives you one diode drop in one direction and two in the other. After testing it out in our lab, we found it to be a nice overall pedal. While it is not perfectly overdrive or distortion, it is a pretty good general gain pedal for those who need “one that does it all.” The JF-02 Ultimate Drive is actually JOYO’s best-selling pedal as far as we know. Into your amp's dirty channel: If your amp has a dirty channel you like, feeding an overdrive pedal into it can be very interesting. The result will completely vary on your amp and pedal combination, and how you dial in your pedal. Generally you're either going to completely change the tonal coloration of your distorted sound, or make your existing distorted tone sound even "bigger." Steve Vai uses the special edition Boss BD-2W Blues Driver Waza Craft, which he talks about at 46:05 into this video. The terms distortion and overdrive are often used interchangeably; where a distinction is made, "distortion" is used to denote a more extreme version of the effect than "overdrive".

Why No Klon Centaur or King of Tone?

For being so popular, the TS9 Tube Screamer is actually not very versatile. It does one thing, and it does it well. We’ll borrow this line from a review we liked: I had this pedal and a friend of mine gave me a real fulltone OCD to A-B test and I found the Joyo very harsh sounding. This is why i started looking for a modification and I found your post.

In the Low Mode, the original tone isn’t messed with, and when in the Hi Mode, there’s a bit more low-mids and bass; it might be considered a “more tone” switch, in practicality. To bring you the best overdrives out there, we keep current and extensively research new products. We periodically review and revise this list as new pedals are released. Other thoughtful options include being able to switch between true or buffered bypass, and choosing what function you want the BOOST footswitch to perform - extra drive, or more volume for solos. You can choose to turn the knob LEDs on or off, true vs. buffered bypass, and the function of the BOOST footswitch. It’s difficult to wander around in the world of guitar pedals without coming across the Tube Screamer. This iconic overdrive pedal has seen various incarnations since the late 70s, and continues to evolve. The Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer is a reissue of the 1980s original, and is the most popular of the Tube Screamers. It even took the #1 spot in Guitar World’s The Top 50 Stomp Boxes, Devices and Processors of All Time. But enough with the trivia. Let’s talk about why the Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer deserves a spot on your pedalboard. An overdrive pedal is a pedal that boosts your guitar signal and amplifies it until it is completely saturated. While a distortion pedal not only amplifies your sound, it does so aggressively and alters it totally. The first difference with respect to the 2009 version is the buffer formed by Q1, C1, C2, R1, R2 and D1. It is one of the most simple and common MOS-FET buffer. The input impedance is well above 1.5M in all the audible range. The Zener Diode (I was not able to read the exact model, so I put a plausible device) should be a 9.1V model intended to protect the FET from electrostatics. It is quite interesting to note that many comments on the internet refer to it as a wrong implementation of the millennium bypass but I respectfully disagree. They simply decided to add a (quite transparent and simple) buffer. Right up up there with the notoriety of the Klon Centaur and the Tube Screamer is the Paul Cochrane Timmy Transparent Overdrive. Paul Cochrane builds these by hand, and despite the reasonable price tag the waiting list to get one can be quite long. If you're not one for waiting there are plenty on the used market.
