Illustrated by Rowland Hillier, with pictorial endpapers, six colour plates and lots of line drawings. Set in the 1890s, its premise is the staple of much children’s literature: a lonely young child, in this case a boy named Kay Harker, has lost his parents and is being brought up by an indifferent guardian and a cruel governess. S. Directed by Gabe Polsky, the film stars Nicolas Cage as the frontiersman Miller and Fred Hechinger. Kay's toys (known as "the guards") have been taken away from him at the start of the book, apparently because they will remind him of his parents; there is a strong implication that Kay's parents are deceased. The two Kay Harker books, The Midnight Folk (1927) and The Box of Delights (1935), are Masefield’s lasting contribution to children’s fantasy literature. A super copy of Masefield's celebrated childhood classic, marking the first appearance of his hero Kay Harker, who would later appear in 'The Box of Delights'. Very good indeed in the scarce dustwrapper which is very good, lightly spotted on rear panel and flaps, slightly frayed at head of spine and with faint scratches to front panel and a fingernail-size chip to bottom edge of rear panel.
